How to make it in Italy

Hello everybody,

I'm new to the SEO world and to this forum.

I am Italian and live in Italy; I have a site to submit to SE which is in Italian and also has an English version. After optimizing code, I have two questions:
1-if I submit the site to local and international indexes of a SE (i.e. Yahoo.it and Yahoo.com, or Google.it and Google.com), with the Italian URL to .it and the English URL to .com, is this considered spamming? Do I get in trouble with SE for this?
2-what SE to submit? From my sleepless nights researching, I gathered: for international, Inktomi and Yahoo (paying) then Google and ODP; for Italian (fuzzy picture here) Arianna, Alltheweb, Tiscali, Il Trovatore. Criticism welcome, I'm here to learn.
Thanks for your time, I appreciate your contributions

Ciao Barbas,

I shouldn't think it would be spamming. If both sites are in their respective languages then it's language specific content. Loads of other sites with many languages are listed in individual country SEs and directories under their respective languages. Shouldn't be a problem.

OK. And the fact that the two index pages, one in Italian and one in English, which are submitted to their respective SE and directory, are on the same server and same domain and are linked to each other? Won't it be considered illegal? Or will it actually help link popularity?
Thanks a lot

It will actually help your linkpop. Imagine that you get local directory listings to both index pages?
It would be prefectly legit to get a listing in both the UK and Italy cats at ODP and Yahoo etc.

As nvision says, there are tons of sites out there with several languages on the same server/domain.

Go for it. It's certainly not spamming :)

BTW remember to take a look at Search Engines in Italy [webmasterworld.com]

Barbas - now that the first point is cleared - translating sites is actually the best strategy and can help your rankings - we should concentrate on
How to make it in Italy!

So cari membri italiani, what are the search engines and directories, Barbas can't do without?

Ciao Barbas!

First of all you should decide if you want quick results (quick inclusion in the search engines and directories) or if you can wait and save money in the paid submission.
Maybe what you can save is less than what you can gain!

I would suggest you these priorities:

1.
[dmoz.org...]

Have a look at your competitors: where they are placed, which title and description they got etc. try to choose the directory that has the higher Google Page Rank (if possible).

2.
[it.yahoo.com...]
It can be still free of at cost, but for a quick inclusion is better to pay.
Same comments as per Dmoz.

3.
[alltheweb.com...]
This can guarantee you inclusion in several Italian search engines.
It is still free, but if you need quick inclusion I recommend you to pay.

4.
[arianna.libero.it...]
Free or pay per inclusion.

5.
[wmc.virgilio.it...]
Free or pay per inclusion

6.
[guide.supereva.it...]
They have a directory managed by "Guides" (editors)
Same suggestions as Dmoz.

7.
[webmaster.iltrovatore.it...]
Very quick and free!

8.
I would suggest Inktomi (pay per inclusion) if you need a quick add
[positiontech.com...]
You do not need to pay if you are placed in Dmoz or Yahoo, but it is a slow process.

9.
[it.altavista.com...]
The free add url seems to work fine and fast... (through altavista.com)
If you need a quick add, I suggest you the pay per inclusion.
[it.altavista.com...]
It can guarantee you the inclusion in Looksmart Italy (good results in Msn.it)

10.
[godado.it...]
This is a pay per click.

I think that these top ten are enough to start.
I would invest extra time in looking for high PR links.

Just to cover about everything:

[lycos.it...]
Choose the category and write directly to the editor; sometimes it works fast; otherwise write to the editor any othe month.

[it.abacho.com...]

[businessitalia.com...]

[sharelook.it...]

[simpatico.it...]

[abcitaly.it...]
This is a directory targeted to Italy. You will get visitors from here.

Good luck
