Lycos might be even less influential in Norway if they sell the online newspaper Nettavisen as this article suggests:

A newbie post, but relevant enough I hope :-)

In the TNS Norsk Gallup survey WebMeasure for June 2002, Startsiden is deemed the largest Norwegian website when it comes to unique visitors. It had 1.472 million unique visitors in June. The top ten list is:

1. Startsiden (1.472)
2. VG Nett (1.438)
3. Kvasir (1.225)
4. Dagbladet (1.024)
5. Nettavisen (0.868)
6. Aftenposten (0.763)
7. NRK (0.519)
8. Finn (0.513)
9. TV2 (0.426)
10. Din side (0.422)
11. Spray (0.398)
14. Nettguide (0.252)

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with this, but Telenor Internett (a division of Telenor Plus, a subsidiary of the incumbent telecom operator Telenor ASA) own 83% of ABC Startsiden AS, who run Startsiden.

Telenor Plus is the largest ISP for the residental market in Norway which to some degree might explain the number of visitors (default start page/home page in ISP initiated browser installations?)

When it comes to search engines and directories, I feel I should point out the following, which I can't see has been mentioned:

--Kvasir--
A web site directory, and business directory.

The information on the Kvasir search info page state that the FAST SE will not index HTML comments, pages with a question mark (a ?) in its URL, pages using the HTTPS protocol and finally pages utilising the meta refresh tag (although it will follow the url in that meta tag). The last one is a bit dodgy. Of the 140 sites currently included in the WebMeasure survey referenced to above, 40 sites use refresh tags on their main page. Which suggests that these 40 sites won't have their main page included in the FAST index.

The search engine claims to honour the robots.txt rules.

--Startsiden--
According to Startsiden, the inclusion of web sites to their directory is a decision of one of their six reporters. They claim their reporters maintain the database to make sure their visitors always get the best information.

!rant! My personal experience from using Startsiden is that their database is outdated and that there are too many duplicates. The 40k+ links would be lower - I don't think substancial - if they did a regular clean up (which they obviously don't). !end rant!

That's all I wanted to say :-)

I totally agree with you Thomas when it comes to Startsiden. Duplicates and dead links have, to my knowledge, never been cleaned up by the editors/reporters.

Hej Thomas - Velkommen :)
Don't forget to check out paynt's Welcome to WebmasterWorld thread [webmasterworld.com]

Thanks for your first post. It was a good one!
You are absolutely right about some of the info the overview threads is a bit dodgy/outdated. We use to keep it updated, but it took (a lot) of time, and the board is not really configured to go back and edit really old threads.

The info in Startsiden is really good. I had an idea that it was primary a "meta" site. A site where you could search all the other search engines - a collection of search sites? Actually I didn't realize that you could submit your site to them.

What is your experience with the traffic from it. I suspect that giving their prominence in Norway they should be very important. Is this true?
..or do the ISP customers from Telenor don't search?

>Kvasir

Redirect. Could these 40 sites come from the directory (Looksmart?) and therefore not from Fast. Hence they would get listed even with the redirect?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.

Hilsen Rasmus ;)

Thank you heini :D

Tor, with Startsiden's 10 employees one would think that at least one of them would have time to check their links from time to time, eh? ;-)

Hei Rasmus.

The search function at Startsiden cover their own directory, and many external search engines and directories. Using those take you to the search engine (leaving Startsiden). There are eight search boxes and a multitude of radio buttons, which IMHO makes it rather user un-friendly. But I guess when you get used to it, it's rather handy ;-) As for their directory, you navigate to your preferred category and submit your site from there. Then it's up to the reviewers to include or exclude your site from their directory, much like Yahoo really.

My site wasn't one of those that made it to the finish line at Startsiden so I can't really comment on traffic from them. As for the Telenor customers - or any other ISP's customers - I believe the prominent placement of the search boxes make the Startsiden front page a popular one. It would be interesting to know what the pages per visitor count is for Startsiden, to see if people actually go past their front page :-)

You said:

The Norwegian Kvasir directories - both general and business - are maintained by Kvasir Norway. The Swedish, Finnish and Danish directories are afaik from Looksmart.

There's no mention about the meta refresh tag on the FAST info pages. I'll send them a quick question to see if they can clarify for us :-)

I hope your questions were answered, Rasmus!

Actually I didn't realize that you could submit your site to them.

I think I mentioned that in msg # 25 ;)

One reason that Startsiden is gets such traffic is probably that Telenor promote it as the default start page for their customers. Another factor may be that the site Telenor used to promote as the default start page introduced pop-up (or pop-under) ads. (Now, there's a stupid thing to do when you're a popular browser start page.)

Regarding the quality of the Startsiden directory, I guess the just haven't got proper maintenance tools. Anyway, the Kvasir directory also has a problem with link rot.

Hi hstyri

I agree with you. Link rot should be a concern for directories as it affect the perception of the quality of the directory. As for Startsiden, with 50k links there shouldn't really be a problem checking the links - at least for 404's. It would be 70 links per hour for a month, and a script should be able to handle that without much problem. Checking the database for duplicate URL's should be easy enough too. But, I'm sure they know what they're doing :-)

I just noticed on ABCStartsiden that their submission option [startsiden.no] is closed for all of September.

Anybody know what's up? Could we be seeing an updated version of the directory soon?

They have closed the directory for new submissions in order to update the index.
