The new dot-biz TLD has proven to be highly popular among Europeans, says a report on Europemedia.net [europemedia.net].
More than 35% of registrations are coming from European companies, topped by Germany with 12% of the totale, followed by the UK.

Besides the overall interest in securing company-names and grabbing for otherwise occupied keywords, what makes the dot-biz so popular in Europe?

For European business the need for a TLD pointing to commercial offers is generic. The dot-com in Europe is perceived as the country specific TLD for the USA.
So if a biz does not want to be associated with operating from across the pond but also not be restricted to a specific European country it might find a dot-biz quite handy.

what!!! shoot me down but i disagree, i think .com means the internet not USA

>>>>grabbing for otherwise occupied keywords

i think this more likely, and as we are already exposed to regional domain names we in europe are probably (mistakenly) more willing to "try" another new TLD, probably for seo the TLD is of no importance but for other purposes dot com is king

>>>>>Half of the initial 2.4m applications were for only 39,000 names

i think this helps show it is partly about just getting unavailable names.

surely the proliferation of domain endings will only reinforce dot coms as being the premier universal tld.

I grapped a few generic local keyword domain names, and it seems - like click_watcher mention - that europeans are more likely to go to what-ever TLD.
Seeing people search, my experience is that people also tend to like domain names containing at least some of the searched words.

I see what you mean.

I like dot-info names... They are sounding more friendly and pretend to contain information... Although that's not true a lot of the times.
