Question: You heard AV claim to be Sweden's biggest SE. But is that really correct? Consider this from MMXI:
MMXI Europe - Top 10 Global Domains Sverige
August 2000
Rank/Unique visitors
1 Microsoft 1,945
2 Passagen 1,749
3 MSN 1,603
4 Telia 1,536
5 Altavista 1,364
6 Hotmail 1,317
7 Swipnet 1,157
8 Aftonbladet 1,139
9 Telenordia 1,082
10 Yahoo 1,069
As we both know, the SE Evreka.se is right on Passagen's starting page, which has 28% more visitors than AV. What is your feeling about this? Got any figures?
For the non-Swedes: No 4, 7 and 9 are local ISP:s. No 2 is the country's most popular starting page owned by Scandinavia online, which also owns SE:s evreka.se, evreka.fi, kvasir.dk and kvasir.no. All use Fast technology.
Koll is the search engine of swedens largest media company Bonnier. They are about to make a big relaunch of the site in December. It is the only swedish SE that use Inktomi.
I think they will be a major player, as they will use their media empire to promote it and have the financials to support it.
Henki: The guy behind Catweb, must have built this by hand originally, because I have one of my subsites in there and I am sure it has not been submitted. Not by me anyway.
Have you been able to figure out how Evreka ranks pages? The results are really strange. See the test I published in the Denmark thread. Repeated that for Evreka with similar results. Can't be any problem with the Fast technology, because they've got what it takes according to the technical description. Is it really just keyword density - the more the better? Pile'em on folks!
I'm courantly doing some research on the most used SE in different countries. Is there anybody who can confirm or disconfirm the following list - acording to Sweden:
Passagen (SOL, Evreka)
Yahoo.se
MSN.com
AltaVista.com
Thanks Henki for helping out with the figures.
This should give a complete picture of the relative sizes. Reach drops below 10% of the surfers from #9 and down.
Spray and Lycos have joined their operations as we have reported. They decided to close Lycos in Sweden and Norway, where Spray is a stronger brand name. In Germany and France they do the other way around.
They also said that they will stay with Fast as their technology provider, but that they probably will switch to Lycos some time 2001.
But right now there is no such plan. It will also take some time to implement. This is their own guess on what is going to happen.
Not very fast, but it gives you the best results i have ever seen.
Does anyone know anything about this? I want to know! ;)
Entireweb is listed above in the main list of Swedish search engines and is not among the top 20 Swedish sites as measured by MMXI. It is a new, unknown and very small search engine which appears to index Swedish sites only - at least I couldn't find any other when I tried it. The index is extremely small - for a search that typically yields 2,3 million hits in Fast and 3,2 million in Google, Entireweb managed to come up with exactly 33.
There was nothing wrong with the quality of the search replies I got, in fact they looked a lot like the first three pages from Google or Fast, but with a different ranking order. I saw several pages from sites where I lave log access, so if Entireweb actually generates referrals I will be in a position to come back and tell you more. None of these sites have been submitted, so I would guess that Entireweb may have spidered top ranking sites found in directories and/or other search engines. Just a guess though.
Here is the November list of most visited search engines and portal pages for November. (Sweden)(NielsenNetRating)

I am suprised to see that Google hasn't made it on its own in Nielsen's NetRatings yet. Just via Yahoo. They were #19 with MMXI in August. With their clean Swedish interface and excellent search replies, they really deserve better. Have you got any explanation for this?
Btw: At what point in your list does reach drop below 10%?
Kvasir - the search engine for Scandinavia Online in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland has implemented 3 three nice features avaiable to all users - yet. A keyword research tool which shows you the number of searches done in a short period (it has not been up and running that long).
Online searches done right now - see what people are looking for, and finnaly a toplist for the 50 most used search terms including rising and falling terms.
Keyword suggetion tool a la Goto:
[evreka.passagen.se...]
Keyword key hole - look at online searches. Try punching a term in a the front, and see it appear in the key hole results right after!
[evreka.passagen.se...]
Kvasir top 50 and falling/rising terms pr. week:
[evreka.passagen.se...]
It's actually pretty nice and it work's on
[kvasir.dk...]
[kvasir.no...]
[evreka.fi...] and
[evreka.passagen.se...] as well :)
The spy page "Spanaren" has been there for a long time now, but the Top 50 is new. I wonder how useful that is, though. It seems that they have taken the search phrases apart so adjectives like "Svenska" (Swedish) and "gratis" (free) make it to the top on their own without any context. I hope they stop doing this, because the first several hundreds of search phrases are single words anyway. All this means is that they are putting meaningless adjectives to the top, pushing real searches down.
However, I compiled it from a list and missed Google.com that should be number 24, just before libertysurf. Thanks for the headsup Jan!
The second reason is that MSN is giving away hosting, also to adlutsites. That has lead to an explotion of private and adultsites on MSN.
Hotmail traffic is included in this figures.
I do not see that much swedish traffic from MSN. Actually Google deliver more. You go figure!
> If you type a word into the URL address field, you are taken to a MSN search page
Thanks Henki! I had absolutely no idea and always thought that the huge number of referrals we get was because IE5 might come with MSN preset as home page. Well, what do you know! If you don't see much traffic from MSN, then it must be because your customers are smarter than to type a search phrase into the address field.
PS: Added google.com to your entry.
Upside is that they measure all the time and all countries. So you can study trends and differences between countries. They also group start pages / search pages in a special nefty report.
I do see a lot of US traffic from MSN, but not from Sweden.
Oh yes, Entireweb is a curry guide clone operated from Oskarström in Sweden. Not an original search engine, a meta engine allright. Much like my own wwwl.seekinall.com
Someone from Entireweb is posting in different fora under different names praising it.
Catweb.nu is built and run by a young lady working with Framfab. It was originally her own bookmarks, that turned into a popular directory. Maby not so strange that your site is there Jan?
If Entireweb is a meta search engine, I guess they should be removed from the list here. I have tried to avoid meta search, since you cannot submit to them, nor optimize for them. Perhaps MasterFly, who appears to be closely connected to Entireweb - in a managerial capacity (?) - wants to give us his opinion on this matter.
Several of the engines you listed yesterday have more than one listing e.g. Evreka and Google. What would their ranking be if you add their listings together?
