Online population.
There are different estimates of the online population in Ukraine.

One research [lenta.ru] (Dec 2000) tells us about 300.000 active users and 150.000 less active. Vice prime minister of Ukraine Zhulinsky said [users.kpi.kharkov.ua] (Sep 2000) that Ukraine has more than 60.000 hosts and 2.6 million online users. And so on...

How can we find the truth? To my mind, we should compare online population of Ukraine with one in Russia to level differences between methods used in researches and make these numbers more useful.

I've explored the geographical distribution of visitors of most popular Russian sites. I took into account only sites with country-independent content. I've revealed that from 13% to 18% of visitors are from Ukraine. Recent research showed up that only 70% of Ukrainian users visit Russian sites. Hence, we can consider that the total quantity of Ukrainians amounts to 19-26% of Russian visitors (it's between 1,75 and 2,4 million). This is maximum audience. Accordingly the active audience is between 200.000 and 500.000. I think, that estimate 300.000 of active online users is true, but maximum audience is considerably greater. It is about 2 million.

Pages in domain: Today (Mar 2001) NSearch knows [search.kiev.ua] about 1.003.000 pages. I think, overall quantity is noticeably greater.

Thank you Alexander. At long last, we are now getting good info about one of Europe's biggest countries (2nd largest territory and 50 million inhabitants). I too would tend to agree with deputy PM Zhulinsky, although I was unable to get through to the server in Charkov that you had linked to. Approaching the question from another angle, I reason like this:

Although the agricultural sector is still big in terms of employment compared to other European nations, the country is heavily industrialized which means lots of engineers and lots of computers. So, the figure of 200.000 online population simply has to be wrong. That might possibly be the number of people who have access from their homes. Ukraine has almost 50 million inhabitants and it is certainly not unreasonable to expect that 5% of them have access to the Internet either from their place of work or from home. And there is no reason why Ukraine would have a lower perectage online than Russia. So I think Zhulinsky is about right on this one.

I think, it is not search engine which indexes sites. It's only a directory which comprises only manually checked links to documents. Moreover, the last change in Sesna was made in 1998, therefore Sesna uses an obsolete search technology. Its popularity constantly decreases and now you can't find more than 100-150 visitors a day.

I'm going to tell you more well-founded estimates, but now I think that there are three pacemakers in Ukraine: search engines ASearch [search.kiev.ua] (ex-NSearch), Meta [meta-ukraine.com] (it started well but now it is ticking over) and a directory UAPortal [uaportal.com].

As I told before in this forum, actually there is only one indexing SE in Ukraine - META. Now it seems like ASearch is going to do the same. And don`t let yourself be cheated - I think about 90 percent of Ukrainian "search engines"(and Russian too) are just directories that provide an search option for its users.

A small piece of news [meta-ukraine.com]: in February 2002 Meta [meta-ukraine.com] served 1,480,397 queries. There were 22% Ukrainian queries, 11% English and 63% Russian queries. About 85% visitors are from Ukraine.

In February Meta had in index about 32695 servers and 2,404,481 URLs.

I will take an educated guess:
1) Russian is widely understood and is still used more than Ukrainian and more results show to the surfer than if they use Ukrainian
2)Amoungst the connected UKR people English is very common.
3) Ukraine is always full of surprises :)

So do I understand you correctly that many russian queries reflect the higher number of russian sites? Understanding of russian is sure very high in Ukrayina, Funsad has described it here: link [webmasterworld.com]

That's right. There're many people whose native language is Russian, not Ukrainian. Your suggestion about more results is also true. People have to use Ukrainian when they're looking for law information or something like that. In all other cases Russian query gets much more results.

Amoungst the connected UKR people English is very common.

You are not absolutely right [webmasterworld.com]. I think that 11% of queries could be worldwide trademarks, names of companies and programming terms.

Yes Heini and also the high number of Russian speakers in Ukraine due to the peroid of the USSR.

You may be right. I base my opinion on the fact that IC cafes/clubs are the way most Ukrainians surf and I have never seen more than 20 % of them do so in Ukrainian.
