So, Arena is a goner. I guess the shake down among lesser search engines has now reached Poland. Eventually, I guess there will be judt one or two purely Polish engines left. Plus Polish versions of the big international engines.

Just like everyone else here I've been lurking for sometime. I've already found the forum vary helpfull.
As for Arena, well, you're right. It failed after an unsuccessful IPO. The shakedown has begun. It was bound to happen, since there were I think more than 10 portals here and still some people founded more. Guess they didn't have where to throw their money away.
Ahoj is also having serious financial trouble.
The ones that will most certainly be left are the big three, that is Onet, WP and Interia. But they too have recently shaved their staffs.

That's what I think too, unless Google kills the last of the three. Poland is a large country with a big population and the online part of that is growing rapidly. Haven't seen any figures from 2001 yet, though. Have you?

The most recent data I could find (available for free) was from April.

It's in Polish, so to sum up:
16,4% of the respondents declared that they use the Net at least once a month. The most used portals are: Onet (44,3%), Wp (27,7%), then Interia 5,8%. Google isn't at all visible here, but you can search through it when you use WP.

Ahaa!!! As I thought: There has been rapid growth in the Polish online population. Our old figure for Poland of 2.8 million (7.3%) was from July 2000. Your new one of 16.4% indicates an online population of 6.2 million.

Could you you check the article to see if the sample they used was drawn fron the entire Polish population and not some smaller part of it?

As they put it, the polls are carried out on a "representative group of 2096 people above 15 years of age". That of course would mean less than 6 mln, but unfortunately I don't know how much.

I would like to add some recent data about polish Internet:
- number of domains 131719 (*.pl)
- number of pages = about 20 mln
- number of indexed polish pages in SE's = max 11 mln
- according to OBOP Research (05'2001) 19,4% of population declare access to Internet. In my opinion 2/3 of them are active.

19,4% is a bit exaggerated, since according to the definition used in the study, access to the Internet is "the possibility to connect to the Internet, regardless of the actual skills of the respondent". So my Grandma also has access, even though she won't come near my computer.

Iīm interested in the use of languages in Poland: Am I correct to assume russian and german being the most used second languages? How about english, with Polandīs membership in the NATO and perhaps french, for historic connections?
Also, what SEs do Polish people use for international searches, has Google or a Fast powered engine already arrived in Poland?

Russian is known by most of the older generation. Most young people though, and this is especially true for the ones using the Internet, have at least some knowledge of English. German is less popular.

They are still using Infoseek? Who is Infoseek then?
Saw on their pages also mentioned Altavista.
On this page [szukaj.onet.pl] even Google is to be found.

Those online translations just donīt work out too good with Polish, I guess the different charset makes it even harder for the programmes.

In the "what's new" section, all they say is that they've worked on a custom version of the old infoseek engine with the original programmers from Foster City, CA.

Well the interface looks similar to Google's. Has been for a while. I'm sure Google knows about it. I don't see any problem here. Why not copy a successful model?
