Managing a directory site

Handling multiple listings and spam...

I have a niche directory site where people can submit their own listings. I have been seeking methods to bump up submissions, and have thought about approaching some of the submittal software companies for inclusion in their software... as the submission procedure is pretty much automated and constant. However, I'm freaked at the possibility of suddenly having a zillion non-relevant submissions.

Anyone been in a similar boat?

We aren't allowing automated submissions. We check all submissions from webmasters before they are public. It's a lot of work, but, in my opinion, the only way to avoid spamming. And then it is still very difficult to find out if the submission is okay. Webmasters are more creative than spam checking software :-)
What do you prefer: quantity or quality?

I agree with hbird64. There used to be some active directory management forums a year or two ago, usually associated with whatever script was being used (Links2 for me). Judging from the number of screams I saw posted about being hit by the auto-submits and FFAs, I decided to go in the opposite direction and added referrer checks and a confirmation page.
