Hello WebmasterWorld people,
While doing a search on DMOZ this afternoon I noticed the tag @ the bottom of the page showed a new date from my searches earlier today. Check it out:

Search database last updated on: Sun Apr 28 19:04:50 PDT 2002
The date prior to this was April 8th 2002. Doing a search on some domains found them listed :) w00t. my question for you guys is, is there another site which gets the data from dmoz daily and updates their information constantly where i could check to see new results in there. I know I could just go in the dmoz catagory daily and check to see if its listed but we're all about searching ;)

I just checked for an update to a website submitted over 6 weeks ago. Any body know why it WAS NOT captured in the 28 Apr 02 update of dmoz? :(

Hi Sparrow,

My understanding is that there are two different processes at work here.

1) A site must be reviewed and accepted by an editor.

2) DMOZ periodically refreshes its database.

I'd expect that you'd need your site reviewed and accepted before the date that DMOZ updates its index.
:)

What a strange coincidence, updated 48 hours after Google twice on the trot, isn't that strange.

Welcome Sparrow and a belated welcome to Mcguffin.

The re-index is an index of those sites already reviewed and accepted by an editor. No other site is included.

The greatest challenge with DMOZ is the former... to have an editor process it. Once this has been done, sit and wait for the next re-index.

I'm not sure by the way why the re-index is now so infrequent. Not too many months ago we were experiencing re-indexes every week or so (or maybe things just look better restrospectively!).

I dont' quite understand what you are telling me. The site was already on dmoz, the original webmaster had a terrible spelling problem. I corrected the errors and asked for a new title because the site title actually changed when I took over the site.

I went to dmoz and used their "update url" option.

Are you telling me this takes longer than submitting a website?

I don't understand, please educate me.

Crickey... 30 seconds before I post Notts Forest Guy sneaks in with a pretty good explanation. An excellent spot NFFC.

Sparrow,

Have you gone to the page that shows the category you're listed in? If so, does it show the old or the new description for your site?

3) The SE / Directory / Portal must download the RDF and publish it.

Yes and it continues to show the old information. I try to check it at least once a week.

Sparrow... if your amended site was in the DMOZ database (check it by drilling down the categories) before 28th April I would have expected it to be in the update.

I view the re-index broadly as a mechanical process of spidering all the different categories. If you were in there by the due date, you should now be returned in searches.

If not... double check that you are still in the actual category.

Well, it's been a log time since the category has had an editor!!!!

When they're looking for an editor, do other editors pitch in to help??

Mike is correct of course... if you are not using DMOZ itself for the search, you may have to wait for the DMOZ provider to refresh.

Sparrow,

My guess would be that you're in the editing queue, waiting for the editor to review the changes. Sometimes this can happen rather quickly, and other times not so quickly.

However, patience is a virtue. Especially with the ODP. Others here might be able to advise about the turn-around time for updating a listing.

:)

No when I perform my searches they are always on the specific search engine.

dmoz is the only engine that has yet to pick the change. All the other engines are show the corrected title and content.

It's hard to explain to the site owner, that well um we're still waiting for dmoz to update. When he sees the update status at the bottom of the dmoz searches now, he's going feel pretty disgusted.

Time to go back to the real world now. Thanks to everybody for helping to educate me.

I'll check the site later for more of your expertise.

Frankly, I would expect DMOZ to be the first to re-index its own directory... I can't explain your observation Sparrow without knowledge of the specific site.

Have fun in the 'real' world!

My apologies Laisha, I'm a newbie, but I also know that's only an excuse. Again my apologies
