I have been trying to get listed in DMOZ for a year as I am sure many people do. I can't even get the editors to reply to a very polite email. My site is well designed and organized. What does it take? My site URL is in my profile if anyone has any tips.

Thanks.

crobb, welcome to webmaster world

just as a sly tip from a fellow member, its best if you dont include URL's to pages within your sites :)

Just put URL's in your profile in future and that seems to be the happy norm

In general sites comprised primarily of affiliate links do not make it into ODP. Those with affiliate links and even lots of them that (occasionally) make it in often have an extensive amount of content.

Take Edmunds for example. It looks like they make most of their online bucks from affiliate programs with financial companies - car loans insurance, etc. Not only are they listed once in ODP, but rather extensively. Looks like 88 listings. In order to get the advantage of one or more directory listings in ODP with the goal in mind to make affiliate income, content is needed.

IMHO, you need a lot more content on your site; stuff that is not about pushing people to sign up for some kind of financial service, but that someone might find useful, something unique that makes your site stand out from anyone else who could compile the same bunch of affiliate links in a similar fashion.

You could have articles on dealing with credit, credit card problems, issues to consider when refinancing a home, stuff like that. It would need to be very well done, the editor would have to find it useful.

Obviously not everyone has the resources of Edmunds, but the content to affiliate ratio ought to be as close to that as possible.

It's tough to get sites listed in that keyword area, editors will be on their guard from the off and rightly so.

As pointed out you need to take a different approuch and play down the affiliate stuff, it may also help to make the site fit in smaller browser windows, no more than 800x600 for DMOZ, imho.

Are affiliate links on deeper pages acceptable, as I have them, as long as I make the top page rich in useful content?

IMHO, the site needs to be designed with the primary purpose to provide the user with something valuable, and not to get them to sign up for one of the affiliate programs. If the editor looks at the site and thinks, hmmm.. this site is designed to get me to sign up for one of these credit cards, it gets deleted. If the editor looks at it and thinks, hmm this is a great resource for financial information or even extensive reviews of the different financial services offered, then the chances of a listing go up significantly.
