Directory Submission ?

I have a site that is actually a directory itself. The problem is that someone would not search for this type of site through a category for directories. They would search for the site through the keyword services that are provided by the sites listed on the directory.

So my question is should I submit to a category for directories such as Home - Biz & Econ - Directories or through one of the keyword categories such as Data Conversion or Data Recovery?

I know that most people do not search through directories like Looksmart, but the service keywords are what most people search for and so it helps to be in a category that falls under one of those keywords.

The key thing is to be in DMOZ -- that gets you a PageRank boost in Google and the equivalent for other search engines, and it gets you into dozens of other replicated dumps of the DMOZ directory.

The quickest way in is to pass the test the editor will apply. It may take them weeks to look at your submission (volunteer editors, after all). If they think you've submitted to the wrong category, they'll simply resubmit or your behalf to the one they think is right.

It may then take weeks for that cat's editor to look at the submission.

Moral: pick the cat you think they think is right for you. Once you are in, you can rethink that.

I have been trying for 5 weeks with no luck to get into Open. After 3 weeks I sent a "very nice" e-mail, but the category has no editor so there is no telling how long it will take.

So I have decided to go ahead and at least get into Yahoo and Looksmart. And thus my problem. My site is a directory site and so logically it could go in a category for directories, but no one would ever search for the services that we offer in that category. They would go to a service keyword category.

Yahoo will take your site. It needs to be pretty finely focused for it to get in. General topic directories don't fair well from what I've heard. If the topic is tightly focused Yahoo doesn't have a huge problem with it.
