We've never paid a penny to Looksmart yet we are listed with them. Can I improve our listing by forking out the fee for review?

Is it a good listing or just a 10th page listing?

If it is a good listng, I would say hold off until the foothold slips.

Mmmm, the listing looks alphabetical?? (me, confused)

The company is HRM Software and if you search for 'HRM Software' then we come top. We also make organisation charting products - searching for this however yields nothing... (except - more bizarrely references to us on our PR companies site).

The *description* under the link to us says: Application developers who specialize in providing human resource software. Learn about the service and support facilities this firm offer.

I've no idea where this has come from ... has an LS editor written it and, more importantly, can we change it.

Thanks for your help

plot thickens...

the results I discuss above are from Looksmart.CO.UK not .COM

Searching on .COM brings up a completely different set of results... so confused:

We don'd show on the featured listings or the reviewed sites, but we do show under the Inktomi results.

Regional LS editors seem to pick up sites from everywhere.

We had some sites, related to italy, (that are only in English) listed in LS Italy with title and description in Italian! (No one italian pages in it!). An italian LS editors probably traduced the category.

Were you in Zeal.com at all? I have had a site included in Looksmart Free of Charge through Zeal after the amalgamation. Mind you, the site in question is a reference site and not overtly commercial. Is your site commercial or not?

I've had many of my sites that were listed in DMOZ show up in Looksmart with identical title/description combinations. I never submitted them and they have good listings.

Didn't cost a dime. I guess when the editors get bored they go out and add sites for nothing. I couldn't tell you if paying the $$ to get the listing would help your listings.

Does anyone?

>>I guess when the editors get bored they go out and add sites for nothing.<<

Might be true, sort of... Paid directories like to make sure they satisfy the search requests of their users. So they keep track of the queries where they had no directory listings (and needed to go to the alternative crawler based engine), and those are the categories their editors work on first. This is why it was so hard to get into Yahoo... because the editors weren't working on submissions in the order submitted. They were working on them in the order needed by the directory to satisfy requests.

Conceivably, if there are no submissions in a category that's receiving queries, an editor might go and look for some sites to include. I don't know if that's what's happened here, but it's possible.

When I do a search on my site name i get over 290 results for my site. But all listings are listed below "Web Sites from Inktomi ". Does that mean that I am not in the LS database?I never paid them to include me , I submited 2-3 years ago I think. How can you check if you are in LS database or not?

Also if I pay LS for submition to them will this get me into AV database or just AV's results from LS which they use when their database "fails"?
