i am in the prosess of trying to work on my search engine positioning...i recently found my site to have been listed in the open directory. from the homepage it is displayed in fourth place for the search term "web directory search" (my sie is a directory and search engine) will this dmoz listing realy benefit my traffic when other sites spidder the odp and their partner sites make use of their data? what sould i do now...should i feed my directory listing page to al many search engines as i can think of or should i just let it run it's course. i am oretty exited at finaly getting an odp listing and want to make the most of it. Thanks in advance.

have a great day.

Watch for it at AOL - that where your position counts
and just let it run it's course - imo

Mack,

I would submit your ODP directory link [dmoz.org...] to the major SE's so that it can be crawled to include your new listing/incoming link from ODP.

Hunter,

I was not aware, that you could submit directory links to the search engines.

Though when i have checked on company names (mydomain), on the big engines, then upcome the directories, except for looksmart, msn, av, aol, and others. So is it worth submitting directory categorys to any and all search engines, that don't list anything other than the site of concern for either www.mydomain.com or mydomain.

mack,

A good odp listing is priceless, esp google directory, and all the others that use it for primary, secondary and tertiary results. Have a look around, there was a string kicked off recently about google and odp's influence.

what are the main advantages of a good ranking with ODP?

AOL, Google - what else?

caine,

>So is it worth submitting directory categoriess to any and all search engines

Sure is...once you are listed within. Just think of it as an incoming link from a very influencial directory/Site.

mack,

Sure does.

Not always.

For instance, don't submit Yahoo or ODP categories to Google -- it will get them automatically just as quickly. (I think AOLSearch gets ODP categories automatically also.)

And don't submit directory categories to Altavista -- it won't automatically spider from submitted pages.

hutcheson,

It's worked great for me with everyone of my Sites.

Of course Google will spider it automatically, it spiders almost everything automatically. The question becomes how long are you willing to wait...

Another big one is Fast/Lycos.

The ones that really count are the untrackable ones. Many smaller directories will cheery pick odp categories when building their own links pages. Those aren't trackable, but they matter for link pop value and surf-in traffic.

Although Alta, Ink, and Excite don't admit it, they still use ODP data in their rankings algo's. Excite even had an odp directory online for a few days last month (now gone).

Other directories have been known to cheery pick ODP sites to flush out their own categories. I've seen it happen on Looksmart, Yahoo, and About.com. When an editor needs sites for a category, where is the quickest and easiest places to find them? They start their quest at the ODP of course.

All that is intangible and difficult to track. However, I've had domains where the only place I've submitted is the ODP. Last November, I submitted a clients alternative domain to the ODP - that is all. I was waiting to submit to other engines.

Turns out, I didn't have to submit to any other engines at all. The site is now mysteriously listed in the big six (av,ink, fast, excite, google,nl). Gee, how'd it get there? It's that magical and mysterious ODP power at work (we should come up with a name for it).

I have been using Copernic Basic to track my listings on SE. Would I be right in thinking that the upgraded versions would track listings on the smaller more vertical Directories?

I'm confused.
What SE's should you submit your good ODP listings to?

I have a few sites with great positions on Yahoo also, should these also be submitted to other SE's, if so, which ones.

Thanks.

Willtell,

My advice to you would be to not worry about it. The undue stress isn't worth it. The search engines, especially Google, will (eventually and/or hopefully) find the page(s) that your site is listed on. It's just takes time.

Instead of worrying about this, I'd focus on the content of your website. As the old addage goes, "Content is King!"
