I saw that one of my sites was indexed by Looksmart. I know that you must pay to get indexed, but i didn't. I even never submittet anything at Looksmart. How is this possible? The description they use is also new to me, i never used that one.

Yes, it can happen.

Editors contribute to the directory adding sites that they consider relevant.

Angiolo is right. Also, Cox Media is involved in Looksmart. Cox also owns several newspapers that use Looksmart as their local directory. Take a look at the search on The Daily Reflector [reflector.com], particularly the submit a site [reflector.com]. I've found numerous pages in both the regional and main LS directory. If you have a Cox newspaper in your area, the local editors might be adding the links themselves as content. I think it may also be a very narrow backdoor for free submit.

And do not forget that LS own www.zeal.com (a directory structured like DMOZ: editors are volunteers).

I did an interview with a VP at LookSmart last December, and asked her specifically about Zeal and about what happens to sites which are not commercial and yet not non-profit.

Her responses were that there are no plans whatsoever as to what they will be doing with Zeal, and that they have a team of editors who looks specifically for such sites.
