Does Google care if you are in the Yahoo Directory?
If not, is it really good for anything?

A link in the Yahoo directory, and any other directory, is as imporatnt an any other link to your site. It gives G the opportunity to find your site and it most probably will add some amount to the PR the site has.

My site is listed in the Yahoo directory and is NOT in the Google index!

At a recent seminar, many of those present who'd used this paid service from yahoo said that it also actually increased their organic ranking.

It can rise your ranking but dont expect much traffic from it
