Listing in DMOZ

I have never managed to get listed in DMOZ but I am in MUSICMOZ. I understand the two are related so is it a case of they out you in one or the other?
Should I be satisfied with being in MUSICMOZ or should I keep applying with DMOZ? (ive already sent several requests over the years).

If you've suggested the site to dmoz once, it's probably not necessary to suggest again. Musicmoz gets a lot less traffic than dmoz, so it's likely suggested bands will get reviewed there more quickly.

Do keep in mind that you're asking a non-ODP-editor for advice there. Their help may be limited.

A little hard to not keep in mind considering they very clearly stated what their relationship to DMOZ and MUSICMOZ is, it is there in plain text just above what you wrote, though thanks for the insight.

Yes I have sent them an email and from what I remember I got a standard response advising that getting listed can take up to **** ammount of time.

My original question was regarding the difference between DMOZ and MUSICMOZ, this was answered and then someone very graciously offered me additional help. Having half a brain I will acept the help. They may well have some useful information for me which will save my time and and that of the editors/support team at DMOZ. This is a forum so will use as such ;-)

Hmmmm, there is no ODP e-mail reply mechanism and no way to query a site submission status via e-mail, so I'm not quite sure what it was that you received.

Despite the opinions of others, asking for a status check is a worthwhile exercise. The first check can validate whether or not the submission has been received, and if it has been declined, or moved, or even touched by an editor. I know that some people want more of a response, and some sort of timeline, (Editor gung-ho will review your site at 9:17 a.m. on April 22)but the basic information you receive does let you know where you stand.

Ok ya got me maybe it was one of the other directories, to be honest it was a very long time ago, I had given up on the big directories completely and didnt feel the need to be in them until the end of last year ;-).

I have now re-submitted my site and will follow the procedures you guys have suggested.

I do appreciate what you are saying with regards to the ammount of information you will be provided with when querying a submission, the day I am paying the editor some money for his trouble is the day I will expect more.

I've found one of the best ways to get listed in ODP is to "go regional".

While many other categories are swamped with URL submissions, chances are your own hometown, county, region or other locality has an editor with local interest.

Add a valid address to your home page, ie-

XYZ Whitenoise, Inc.
123 Main Street
Yourtown, ST 12345 (USA)

and submit in the "Regional > Country > ST > Yourtown" cat.

Most people are only looking for the "listed in DMOZ" approval that gives them a bump in major search engine acceptance. Any listing in DMOZ will do that for you -- you don't have to be in the "Whitenoise" cat.

I should point out that putting an address on a site won't necessarily make it appropriate for a Regional listing.

I second that pointer. You can put the address for the White House, but you won't get a Politics category listing as a result, either.

I was only suggesting that he try to "go local". I have several sites that did not get listed in DMOZ until they had address info (somewhere on the site -- home page, contact us, etc..).

If you are trying to run "World-of-Gadgets.com" and cant's get listed in the main "Gadgets" cat for some reason, I'd think being listed in the:

REGIONAL > US > IDOWA > Bumpsville

category is BETTER THAN NOT BEING LISTED at all...

I was a regional editor, and had national and international companies moved to my category (a REGIONAL>US>STATE>TOWN cat) because the company was headquartered here.

It has been awhile since I have visited Webmasterworld but was compelled to read some posts after having hit and miss luck with DMOZ. Some clients we submit take a couple of months some never seem to make it in DMOZ. My own website has 2 seperate DMOZ listings which on listing is on a PR 4 pae and the other page has not received PR for over 3 years now.

Neither listing seems to help in any great way as far as SERPS go. I have far better results from off page(link anchor text) and on page factors.

Yes and no, I think. It doesn't take any trouble to submit, so it can't be more trouble than it's worth. Read the guidelines, find the right category, and submit it. Doesn't take more than 10 minutes. It's definitely worth that much time.

However, the value of the link gets highly overestimated by a lot of people. It's really just one link. If you're spending more time on trying to get a DMOZ listing than on acquiring any other link, you're wasting time and energy, IMHO. Submit the site and then stop worrying about it.

Hmm....10 minutes would be a dream...the server problems still haunt DMOZ. Sometimes it can take hours to get a submission submitted.

My feeling is we are going to stop worrying about DMOZ and focus on other things.

Before re-submitting, I would go to the DMOZ forum and check the status of your previous submission. I recall a DMOZ editor saying that re-submissions essentially go to the back of the line, and only add to the delay in getting listed.

I just fail to see the relevance DMOZ has I guess. Sure the google directory and alike are DMOZ based but I do not see any traffic plus or minus to be there - most of my sites and my clients seem to get very little if any directory refferals.

We have all but given up on DMOZ submissions or trying to update listings already in DMOZ for that matter.

We have tried to update a url in dmoz for almost 2 years. We have sent about 12 - 15 requests in to have it changed to the new one (over 2 yers old now) but the editor has never changed it yet.

Anyone have any ideas?

Does the old URL still work? If so, you need to either redirect the old URL to the new one, or put a message at the old URL that says something like "we've moved to <new URL>, please update your links and bookmarks."

Otherwise it would be too easy for someone to hijack a DMOZ listing by submitting an update request for someone else's site.

Shouldn't that be enough for them to realize that it is okay to change it?

I sure would love a DMOZ listing, I'm currently waiting about 6 months, i've complied with all the guidelines, and have messaged on the resource zone. Still no luck.. I've basically given up...any ideas?

I'm on war rations here at home and could use the business..any dmoz editors out there who care to put one more through?

Don't see a problem linking to individual categories (though that could change:)), however, if it seems that the purpose is to call out individual sites listed within those categories or post a spam report the post would be deleted.

I think it would be a deep linking issue. If redirecting domains the spider picks up the switch and implements it almost immediatly, my guess is that since DMOZ generally shuns the deep links they dont follow 301's on them. If its an issue you probably could do a 301 to a second domain for a week and then (from the second domain) 301 to the domain proper with the deep link, but thats just a guess on my part, it might kill the deep link completly and go to your homepage instead.
