Becoming an dmoz editor.

New editors being added?

I was reading up on how to become a dmoz editor. I told myself not to complain about the ODP if I didn’t try to get involved. I thought I would see what was involved and what kind of commitment was required.

Are new editors being brought onboard?

I found what I believe is the current newsletter, Christmas 2002. Should I draw any conclusions that the newsletter is not current?

The amount of time you give to DMOZ is up to you.

If you start with a small category, you can probably keep it clean and up-to-date for an hour a month.

If you take on more, the sky's the limit for the time you give to the project.

You might want to put aside 3-4 hours when you first become an editor to read (and get lost in) the internal forums and advice to new editors.

The newsletter? I suspect the editors doing it haven't had the time....Maybe you could help.

New editors are being added all the time.

The newsletter isn't really anything to go by. It's about an annual newsletter these days.

I'll make my standard suggestion that you should apply for a small category that's likely not to be deluged with spam submissions, such as an informational/recreational subcategory you have a hobby site about (or just a bunch of bookmarks about), or maybe a Regional category in the town you live in. Starting in a Business or Shopping category is do-able, but in my opinion it's very difficult and it would be easy to get overwhelmed. If you start someplace out-of-the-way you can learn the ropes and then move on to a larger or busier category. That's what I did, and it worked for me. (-: I joined on less than a year ago by the way. Everyone there has been very helpful and encouraging; so I definitely think new editors are still being very much welcomed.

A new newsletter has been written but staff haven't published it yet. There is also a weblog, albeit an unofficial one.

yeah, go for it!

Becoming and editor is not as difficult as some make out.

I applied for a large regional category but was told to go for something smaller.

So i did and went for /regional/myCity/internet which only had about 40 sites.(have to start somewhere) I went through all the links and spotted several that shouldn’t be there (few dead, porn redirect etc), i mentioned this in my application, and became and editor a few hours later.

If you check the bottom of DMOZ's home page, it shows number of editors and it seems to change very frequently (at least once a day?).

AFAIK, new apps are reviewed by metas whenever they feel like it. As there are lots of metas, I'd expect every day at least some apps are reviewed.

I applied 2 months ago and haven't heard anything yet. No new sites have been added to the category I applied to (including mine :P). One of my other sites was added within a week to a different category. Responsiveness to submitted pages and editor applications seems to luck of the draw.

No doubt that's one of the facts of life when dealing with an all-volunteer, human-powered project, right? :)

I applied two weeks ago and haven't heard anything.

I was thinking the same as jbinbpt, that I shouldn't complain about DMOZ if I wasn't doing anything to help.

I guess whether I get accepted or not I will be able to complain now.

If you apply for a World (non-English) category it tends to take longer than if you apply for an English-language category, but we try to handle all applications within a month. (Also, Christmas vacation has made us a little shorthanded, I hope you understand.)

Did you receive and reply to the automatic e-mail sent out to verify your e-mail address?

I have applied a few times and been declined for one reason or another each time. I work for a print publishing company in the area I would like to become an editor. They seem to find a reason to decline me every time. I will try again.

Denied again. I even pointed out a URL that does not exist (this page cannot be found) gave them the new address for the site (no, it's not my site, I have been watching it for 6 months to see if anyone would pick up on it at DMOZ)
And the link is still there going to no page!

[Has this thread become about someone's attempt to be an editor? I didn't expect the forum charter to let that happen.]
