I am working on an organized collection of links for my niche topic. It's grown to about 200 links, and I will likely add more if people with informative sites request a listing. Is there any benefit to registering a separate domain name and calling it a directory to just having a cluster of pages off my main site?

In my primary keywords, it certainly seems like directories and other authoritative sources get some boost from Google. My sites that are niche directories also have great clickthrough with AdWords, but unless you're running a PFI directory, you probably don't want to have PPC positions for a directory. I also think that it's easier to get inbound links to a directory, you'll have a better chance of getting a link from About or DMOZ (most business cats in DMOZ have 'Directories' subcats) for a site that positions itself as an authoritative resource. And that positioning is the main thing, because it encourages people looking for info in that topic to return, hoping to find fresh listings.
