Reach of Portal Sites/ Category listings?

Hello,

Has anyone researched the importance of Categorical Listings (like yahoo, looksmart,..), traffic-wise?

If I have a group of n ppl, all searching for something specific (a product) how many of them will be using
categorical listings, and what percentage will simply type what they search for in a search engine?

I am aware that this varies by product, but I'd still be grateful for pointers.

The only ones I know of that have stated to have done such research is Alexa and NPD. Both those studies are high 5 figures.
