Dmoz Submission

After waiting a year to be submitted to Dmoz without success, I.....

After waiting a year to be submitted to Dmoz without success, I have started applying to alternative catagories that also describe by business accurately in the hope there is an active editor for one of the catagories I'm not applying for.

My question is whether this will hinder my original submission in any way. For example, if I apply for the widget information catagory on 09/02 then widget sales and widget recycling catagories on 09/03 will my original application for widgit information be removed as Dmoz notice that I am applying for multiple catagories for a single URL?

Cheers all

Chris

Hey there,
First off i would like to point out that just because there is not an active editor for a category does not mean it will take longer to have a site approved. I submitted a site 2 months ago to a category with no editor and it was reviewed and approved within 1 week. It did not show up in the listings for about 5 weeks but could by found on dmoz after it was approved by typing in its address in the search.
They will know that you have submitted to multiple categories and they do not like this, it states this in the submitting guidelines. They will also put your site at the "bottom of the list" when you resubmitt it before they have reviewed it.
If you want to know whats going on with the submission just go to the ****.com and be nice, it never hurts.

The guidelines do state that you should submit to the one best category. And, one thing you should consider. If you submit to the widget sales, widget recycling, and widget information categories, you may end up being listed forever in the wrong cat, rather than the one you prefer. Let's say you prefer the widget information cat. If some editor of the widget recycling cat spots that submission first and adds it, later editors may just see you site is already listed once, and quickly delete the widget information and widget sales submission.

too much information

I don't know if I agree. I went to ********-****.com to see what my status was and I was told by an editor to also submit to another category while I was waiting.

It's been over a year since I submitted. I know my description is clean, and my site definately qualifies. In fact the category I am submitting to has doubled since I submitted. All of my competators are listed (or most of them anyway) and even some that I know are newer than mine.

In my honest opinion, I have lost alot of respect for DMOZ. My experience is that it is dificult for the majority of internet users to find out the status of their submissions.

Not to mention the speculation that it has some effect on your rank in some popular search engines. Which makes it more important than it should be on it's own. In fact I don't know of a single person that actually uses DMOZ as a search for anything.

Maybe I'm being synical, but really... a year to review a site? I know the back log can't be that long. Not to mention that I've applied to edit and havn't heard back on that either, if they are so back logged you would think they would let more people help.

Oh well... :(

According to a DMOZ editor:

"... there's no problem with having one site simultaneously in both a topical and a regional unreviewed pool."

This was in response to a question I posted regarding having one URL in two categories. Just choose the best regional subsection for your widgets, submit there, and cross your fingers :)

BTW, I did this and am now awaiting review in two categories. Any day now, I can just feel it...

@chrisholgate

If you're referring to the URL in your profile, it appears to be a deeplink of another website and is thus unlikely to be listed.

Spreading a website over multiple domain names doesn't make it eligible for multiple listings.

I too have been trying to submit for many weeks and now that their lame submission process is timing out, I don't know if I have submitted multiple times or not!

What are they using over there? Old TRS-80s?

Edavid, you definitely won't be penalized if your submission goes through multiple times due to a buggy form. Don't worry. (-: Your later submissions will simply overwrite the earlier ones, if that happens.

If you want to know if your submission has made it through yet, you can also ask on our public board and someone will check the queue for you.

edavid,

The submission form/system has been down for a few weeks...so you certainly aren't putting through any duplicates.

That wouldn't surprise me :).

DMOZ would have to take the prize for the high-profile web site with the worst reliability.

The connectivity and submission problems make it almost impossible to use. Everyone is too scared to submit multiple times yet the submission process encourages it through poor performance.

Thanks, flicker. Will be more patient, and will hit the public boards.

jimnoble, I am unsure as to what you mean about my website being a deeplink of another site. I have two sites, both relating to the same company but two completely different sides of the business. Surely there's nothing wrong with that?

There's nothing >wrong< with it, no, but both sites won't necessarily qualify for ODP listings. I haven't looked at the particular site in question and this isn't the right place for a site review anyway; however, be aware that in general, listing more than one website from the same company is the exception rather than the rule, and is only likely to happen if the content of the site really warrants it.
