I thought dmoz had upgraded their servers but when visiting yesterday and today I get either a timeout or veeeeery slow response.

Did I get it wrong about the upgrade or are they having some new server wobbles?

Their public forum is up the spout too so I can't check for info there.

I remember they used to have a mirror that was always pretty quick - can someone remind me of the url if it's still working?

dmoz.ch and dmoz.de, as I recall, but while I can ping both of them neither responds to my browser.

The official mirrors are ch.dmoz.org and de.dmoz.org; dmoz.ch and dmoz.de exist, but they are unofficial language gateways maintained by editors (like dmoz.nl, dmoz.fr, and many others).

The final phases of the ODP server upgrades are under way, including the installation of the public scripts (i.e. public-to-editor feedback, suggest/update url). This may be a contributing cause of slow response times on dmoz.org, though it might be completely independent of it.

Ah, fair enough. Seems to be working today anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.

Not for me. I have been trying to submit a few sites for a few weeks now.

For such an important site, you would think they'd get their act together faster than this.

Hopefully the new upgrade will prove to be worth the wait.

I am having the same problem... timeouts and 404 errors. Is there a 'best' time of day to submit?

The ODP public forum has announcements from the senior editors on the current submission problems known to be being experienced.

Do you have a URL for this public forum on DMOZ?

Try forums.dmoz.org

h**p://forums.dmoz.org is not the correct URL for the dmoz forums.

To find the dmoz forums, just search Google for "dmoz forum".
#1 on that SERP is the place to be :-)

forums.dmoz.org links to both the public and private forums.

I haven't been able to submit any sites in about a week now - i can select ADD URL but when i click Submit it sits without doing anything until i get brought to a 404 a few minutes later.

do submissions to dmoz.ch go to the same place as the .org?

ya the .ch seems to revert to the .org when you hit submit so it just stops and doesnt' finish the submission - maybe this is a good thing though - if people can't submit maybe they clean up some of the backlog of sites that still havn't been added to the directory and then when it's back up we will be added quicker (always thinking hopefully! :)

As I noted in another thread, dmoz.ch is not a mirror, it is an unofficial gateway side maintained by a volunteer editor. The official mirror would be ch.dmoz.org .

But regardless of whether the forms are located on a gateway site, mirror, or licensee (e.g. Google Directory), however, the links for actual site submission, editor applications, etc. are now located on dmoz.org. I can confirm that the scripts are working, but I can also confirm that they are timing out with some frequency.

Another problem with forms and links pointing to scripts on editor-only (and thus password-restricted) servers/directories has also been resolved as of this post.

yep, still down. sometimes can't even get to the home page. pretty lame for a directory that so many other big sites think is important. Do I hear a death knell tolling?

DMOZ works fine for me in the UK, editing, adding a site and looking through the public side of the directory!

To the best of my memory, DMOZ has been consistently dodgy and unstable for a good year. Sometimes the site loads, sometime it doesn't. Sometimes I've been able to submit a site, other times I couldn't, or I would time out several times before it finally took. Lately, like the last few month, DMOZ is sluggish and sketchy.

I wish it wasn't so important. I actually have a list of clients I need to submit to DMOZ when and if it the site functions properly. That's just sad.
