Zeal announced a "Zeal Charity Drive". For every new edition submitted between now and Oct 22, to the zeal directory by it's members, zeal will donate from 25 cents to a dollar to a charitable organization of the members choosing.
There may be plenty of kinks and problems that need to be worked out with the zeal system but they certainly do create a "community feel". This is also IMHO a very clever way to increase the size of the directory and boost public image at the same time.
"hats off" to creative thinking at Zeal.

Charity's great, but there's something a little pathetic about a directory that's actually TRYING to get bigger.

Poor Zeal. They're like the nerdy kid in school trying desparately to be worthy of a seat at the cool kids' table in the cafeteria.

Yes, but the ODP was the same in 1999. At the time, the target was to beat Yahoo, which has not been much of a target as of late.

I (heart) Zeal.

Pretty cool news, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Bad logic. With your attitude a new directory could never get started.

Isn't trying to get bigger the goal of most new businesses?

A decent e-mail solicitation for a change, worthy of an opt-in. So a thousand sites are worth a thousand bucks to them:

"If you contribute more than 100 sites, we’ll donate 50 cents for each site. And for those Zealous contributors who add more than 1,000 sites during the promotional period, we’ll give $1 to charity for every site added."

Many of US ARE nerds to other people.

when things become too big and unmanagable, (like dmoz), smaller ones take there place soon and the too big ones just disappear one day. (its the law of the nature).
Zeal is doing a good job and I guess it is a very good alternative to DMOZ.

It's a good move by Zeal and I like them too. But their site's interface sucks! And it's very slow too. They should do something about it asap.

Have you ever checked them up. They are quite big. Hats off to them on this great move.
