Difference between a search and drilling for info

Why and what does it mean

On DMOZ I just did a search from the main page. My site, which I requested a change in cats for, appears in the new cat right at the top.

But, when I tried to drill down through the cats one by one, my site is still in the old cat.

Looks like two completely different databases.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

It is two different databases. They are updated on different schedules, and the update process is being updated. We have no update on the update of the update, sorry.

Thanks for the update :)

Really, I never knew that there were two live to the public DB's involved. Interesting system you guys have there.

One thing you need to understand about how ODP search is designed to work. Ordinary users don't search for specific sites. If they already know the site, they don't need the ODP to find it. The idea with the search is to look for the right category, and after finding that category see what sites are listed. Thus, for people who are using the search function as intended, that the databases aren't quite in sync is near irrelevant.

Same could be said for Google's datacenters. But boy, when they get out of sync you should see all the posting at WebmasterWorld :)

Actually, I had entered a single keyword in the search box knowing it would take me right to the cat I was looking for. Just didn't realize that it would take me to a different DB entirely.

You are correct of course. This would be transparent to the average user.
