SPAM using DMOZ info

I received a (spam) e-mail at my webmaster@domain.com address that said that the sender had found us listed in the ODP under domain.com, and that he would like to use that to our advantage to get us even better traffic.

Funny (or not so funny) thing is that we *are not* listed in the ODP. I've been trying to get us in for 6 months, but we are in a very busy category that does not appear to have an editor.

Is it at all possible that we are in fact in the directory, even though a search for www.domain.com, domain.com, domain, (and every other variation I could think of) turns up nothing? Or should I write this off as a really poorly researched SPAM message?

If you don't think you're in the directory then you probably aren't. The two best ways of finding out are firstly to navigate to the category where you would be listed and look specifically for your site or company name (more reliable than the dmoz search), alternatively to go to Resource Zone (search in Google) and ask about the status of your submission.

I'd ignore the spam either way... ;)

I recently received some spam that I belive came from my DMOZ listing. I'll try to find the email to see what it was about.

Sure, why not? I've gotten spam from my ancient Yahoo listing, and I'm sure we've all received the scammy "your site is about to be deleted from the opensites directory [ODP clone] unless you remit $xxx" e-mail.

Yeah, let them delete your site from TopSites!

You will be still be listed at the ODP, in Google, and in hundreds of other sites using ODP data.

You'll just be missing from TopSites; no big loss really.

I'd hit the delete button and move on.
