niche directory payment option

what do you think about this option, the first year listing is free and then charge monthly or annually for the service, and maybe a little one time fee as spamprotection, you can get listings and you can build the traffic in this time and then you have a good reason to charge monthly/annually? And i think more people link to your niche directory if its not a full commercial site without free service. Do you think people would pay the fee after a year? Business.com uses this system, but i dont know how successful they are with it.

It’s down to the traffic you send, if it's worked out then yes I would pay

Many niche directories use the system of a "trial" period

I would suggest a month or maybe 3 months, rather than a year.....

...but as has been pointed out, unless you have sent measurable traffic, and the cost is reasonable, then they woun't pay :(
