I had my description changed in DMOZ a little while back and the change shows up if I drill down to it in the directory. If I do a search for my site on DMOZ I get the old one. I also get the old one in Google. Anybody know what the deal is?

The dmoz.org search index, and Google's description, are based on the ODP RDF. The RDF is normally created about once a week, so recent changes will not be reflected therein. Moreover, the internal search may update less frequently than that.

Google updates on its own terms as well and the ODP has no control over that.

On top of that, the ODP systems are undergoing an extensive upgrade; the current public pages are not necessarily reflect the most current version of the database, and RDF generation may be impacted as well (haven't been able to log in to see the status).

Have a look at

[webmasterworld.com...]

various explanations as to what is going on at DMOZ, and why you are getting "old copy"

It normally takes a couple of weeks to show up in the ODP site search. Don't worry about it as that facility is only really used by editors not the public.

The directory at Google gets an update by Google grabbing an RDF file from [rdf.dmoz.org...] whenever they feel like it. The RDF is always there, and a new one comes out normally about every week. Google directory is normally about 6 to 8 weeks behind the real live ODP listings.

The changes were made a month ago. The changes are made and do show up when you browse through the directory system. The old results show up when you do a search on DMOZ or Google Directory. I just thought it was weird that a manual directory browse and a search on DMOZ.org brought up two different things. I don't think this RDF thing has been updated in over a month. I understand why Google may not have an updated RDF but why would DMOZ not have one. It just seems bad if a site has a search feature that returns results from it’s own site that are wrong. Obviously their search feature does not sync with their actual site very often.

The most recent RDF was created 24 June 2003.

I would be shocked if you got anything other than token referrals from dmoz.org itself. The dmoz.org search is primarily used by editors to return categories, which are much fewer in number and which change less frequently than listings, and right now I think most editors are intent upon having our limited staff resources devoted to installing and upgrading the backend servers.

Search is being updated much less frequently at the present time, as processes are being interrupted by the need for doing upgrades, and well anyway, the upgrades are of a much higher priority. Search not being quite right, or a few weeks out of date, is much less important than the ongoing work to improve the site access and speed for editors.
