I am currectly stationed in Iceland throught he Navy, and I can not access DMOZ 95% of the time, I always get DNS errors and ERROR 500s when I submit sites.

What the heck is up with them, now?

I have no problem with any other site, and my ISPs administrator has checked the nameserver twice.

AS stated here in many threads, and on multiple other fora, the ODP servers are

1. under sever strain. The ODP has been far more successful than the originators ever though possible, more sites, more categories, more editors, more users, and everything is just about maxed out.

2. about to be upgraded. New stuff was ordered a while ago. Some things, like new RDF box, and so on are already in hand, but the other stuff is going to happen over the next couple of months or so.

Yes, that is what happens to anyone trying to submit sites from anywhere, not just Iceland.

Whatever the "spin" put out about why this sorry state of affairs might exist, we all have to accept that it is a fact that one finds it just about impossible to submit to DMOZ right now

The new servers are (allegedly) soon to be online. But that has been the situation for some time. There is a touch of manana about it

Having said all that, you can still submit given about an hour of your time and a good deal of patience. Remember to keep a copy of your submission in case you need to cut and paste it in further attempts in the session.

And it may help in trying off peak (USA) times - though personally I have never found any hour in the 24 better than any other.

When upgarades were first mentioned, that was when the kit was on order. Some of it has already turned up and been fitted. Much of the stuff done so far, like new server for the editors' forum, new server for the RDF, etc, has had little effect on public browsing , or on editing, and submitting sites, whilst vastly improving the fora for editors, and the RDF functionality. The next phase of improvements will help the editing functions even more, and then finally the public will see improvements. There was no point in improving public acccess first as that would have led to people being able to easily submit, whilst editors would still find it difficult to edit; and that would have increased, not decreased, the queues. First priorities seem to have been to make it easier to edit. There is still a few months of work to do. This isn't going to happen overnight.

That is my impression, anyway.

If you want to browse through the directory now, I would recommend using the directory either on Google or Netscape. Both are much more reliable for just viewing the directory.

I think the problem that most "complainants" in WebmasterWorld have is with submission. Regrettably you cannot submit anywhere other than with dmoz.org.

Thank you for all of your feedback everyone. <edit>my site</edit> is listed in Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, and DMOZ, I just prefer DMOZ because it seems to feed the other major engines.

I guess this would explain why one day I get a bunch of hits from them and then I see no results for weeks, although my site has changed very little.

I wish you all good luck with your sites, and wish you farewell!
