Some people, well me, are curious. Are list that long, of sites to review. Or do you as an editor have a huge checklist. Well just how long does it take to review lets say 1 site?

I mean you have to email, and maybe put the site in, This could take awhile I guess with the server problems over there.

But like if you had 100 sites in your box, how long would it take you to review them?

Thanks!

"Sites are sitting in there and have not been reviewed for over a year."

Many of those sites have been reviewed three, four or even more than a dozen times.

You don't seem to understand what "user-contributed" is! Submitting sites isn't the half of it, or even the quarter of it.

Users contribute by volunteering to edit, and it is freaking easy to become an editor if you are literate. It isn't easy to be an abusing editor and it isn't easy to start as an editor in a large category or a category notorious for spam. You have to start small, do productive work and pay your dues. Crying doesn't count or help.

Simple fact is, there is no excuse for calling yourself a user-contributed web directory, when you are not. Sites are sitting in there and have not been reviewed for over a year. If I called myself a baseball player, then I should play baseball. If I called myself a writer, then I should write. The ODP is the non-directory.

Pish tosh. The ODP could completely stop taking new submissions, lock out every editor, and purge the unreviewed queues right this very second and the sites already listed would still qualify it as a user-contributed directory.

>> The ODP is the non-directory. <<

... which currently lists nearly 4 million websites, with less than a couple of percent of link-rot, and hijacked domian sites included. 97% of 4 million is, ummm....

>> And, by the way, what's with the server being so slow/ or down all the time? <<

The ODP has been far more popular that the originators ever thought: more categories, more sites, more editors, etc; and the original design cannot cope with the sheer number of users. At one time it took several minutes just to submit one edit, and return to the next screen. New servers are on order, and various improvements have been made in recent times, are being made at the moment, and more will follow shortly. For users just browing the directory it is recommended that you use [ch.dmoz.org...] instead, or else [directory.google.com...]
