Today?

The DMOZ site has been down for months...you're lucky if you get a page up. :)

They are installing alot of new hardware to make it run abit quicker, give it a few days and things should clear up :)

I dunno man...I've heard the "installing new hardware" thing for months now.

AFAIK, new hardware takes around, oh, say five days to arrive, and two days to install.

Head over to resource-zone and you can read about the problems that they have been having in the last few days, and the new hardware issue as well :)

Dunno Craig:

I was browsing resource-zone and couldn't really find anything too current regarding hardware.

I have to agree with that. Resource Zone is fine is you merely want to know if your site is (still) waiting review ....

You will get more open discussion on DMOZ here at WebmasterWorld - the moderators here actually allow criticism ;)

All the top secret info ;) is on the editors forum, which is only available to the editors of DMOZ, in the last week there has been an upgrade of the DMOZ hardware.

The problems of the site being unreachable at present, I think is a seperate issue not related to the new hardware.

If you are just wanting to browse the ODP then you can use ch.dmoz.org a mirror that runs about 24hrs behind the live version, you cant add a site through this mirror, its read only.

Hope this helps :)

Hmmm, well there's no way to tell what it is from here, because the atdn.net exit ramp for dmoz seems to block icmp (an archaic and useless practice :)

However, I seem to get the name lookup pretty quick, so I'm thinking it must be a server/software issue if the h/w is taken care of.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm giving DMOZ a thumbs down

Thanks tigger and craig.

Now let's see. About 5 million entries - url, description, links, and overhead - say at most 1000 bytes per entry (more like 300 bytes) - comes to about 5000M. Say 500 GB transfer. Hey, I found a hosting service that will provide this for $49.99 a month. Let's get DMOZ a new home!

I read somwhere that the mirror uses 40GB a month. Thats a mirror that not many people know about as well :)

the mirror = ch.dmoz.org and you get onto dmoz 100% of the time (in my experience).

Woo! Another ODP-bashing thread. Site hasn't been down at all "today" from where I sit.

To try to deny that the ODP site is not off line for users for considerable portions of the day is a bit like the Monty Python sketch where they try to deny that the parrot is in fact dead. For those of you not familiar with the arcane past of British humour :-

O: We're closin' for lunch.

C: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about this parrot what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique.

O: Oh yes, the, uh, the Norwegian Blue...What's,uh...What's wrong with it?

C: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's dead, that's what's wrong with it!

O: No, no, 'e's uh,...he's resting.

C: Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.

C: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home?

O: The Norwegian Blue prefers kippin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage!

C: Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.

I understand that the DMOZ servers are currently nailed to their perch to give the world the impression that they are still alive ;)

Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee!

Rumor has it that they really, really ARE working on fixing the problem(s).

C: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it!'E's bleedin' demised!

Ah, Monty Python - how I miss thee..

Just tried a search on ch.dmoz.org, get a "server under heavy load".. are there any other suggested reliable mirrors?

There is no search on the mirror, it's for browsing. The search there links back to the main ODP server, which is why you get the 'under heavy load' message.

And no, there are no other true mirrors.
