Hello,

I want to get my commercial website listed in Zeal and can't figure it out. I signed up and passed the initial tests that earned me 25pts. I thought from that point I could list myself but I guess because it being a commercial cat, I can't. Is this correct? I posted a message and a zealot said I had sign up for listings.looksmart.com to be in the zeal directory. Is this correct? Do they only offer PPC? If so I am not interested. Is ther any other way to get in a Zeal commercial cat?

Thanks,
Josh

Nope, if you are commercial -> they make you pay.

Even if they accept your site, a LookSmart editor will boot it later - which then is more irritating if you had gotten accepted in the first place.

Imho, Zeal is just an annoying waste of time - however, others may have a different perpsective.

:) You can always try their PPC -> and remember, "actdumb" apparently is a great example of a snafoo (mistake) of theirs.

Use the site search for more details. Cheers.

Actually, for me it is by far the most important directory. Coming up #1 for numerous search terms on msn.com, including single word search terms, is a nice thing. :)

Zeal works well for some of my content as well -- brings in quite a bit of MSN traffic. For other types of content, I never see any search results besides Yahoo! & Google.

I run content sites, so must of the stuff fits into Zeal -- even if it includes some affiliate links. A few pages of mine would belong in categories marked commercial, so I can't get them in there -- which is a bit sad.

So "How does ZEAL work"? I am a little confused. Zeal is a directory that you pay looksmart PPC to be included in and it helps in show in MSN search engine?

Please explain.

No, Zeal is free - it's the same directory as Looksmart but you can only list noncommercial content there, which then gets distributed on MSN. To list a business site you would have to pay LS...

I get a lot of MSN traffic because of my Zeal listings - even more than the Google/ODP combo.

Hmmm, and looksmart ONLY does PPC? There are no flat fees for being listed? What if you have a non-commercial section of your website such as "learn about widgets"?

Thanks,
Josh

It would probably get accepted as long as it met Zeal's other guidelines. You also have to note that there are some subjects where a good chunk of the categories are marked "Commercial". I don't know if or how you can add a non-commercial site to these cats.

Pass the test, find a few dead links, then add a couple sites and slip yours in. If it's non-commercial, it'll usually get in. I get an enourmous amount of traffic this way, you come up as a "Directory Site" in MSN search. They've changed guidelines and now have "Admin Approval" (Looksmart employee), so it really isn't much like DMOZ.
I don't know what the About.com relationship is, but they have no trouble being listed everywhere as "non commercial". From what I can tell, after your in, "Zealbot" visits about every 48 hours and reindexes.
