DMOZ Categories - Which one?

Suggest a new category?

I have a dilema about which category to submit my new webiste in DMOZ.

It seems that my content is not that appropriate for any of the existing categories (in fitness).

Do you guys think I have any shot at suggesting a new category, or will my suggestion result in DMOZ editors completely ignoring my submission?

For specific enquiries, the best place to ask is at Resource Zone (this category's charter or search in Google).

In general terms, dmoz has categories for most things but not all - new categories are frequently created but rarely at the request of webmasters. A webmaster is expected to submit to what *they think* is the *one* best category for their site. If there's a better one then the site will just get moved when it's reviewed - that's fine. So long as you're reasonably close then it won't be held against you.

Do:

1) ask at Resource Zone for a suggestion of the best cat to submit to.

2) look to see where your closest competitors are listed (assuming they do basically the same thing as you).

3) consider whether you would also be eligible for a Regional listing.

Don't:

1) submit to every category that you think you might possibly be eligible for.

2) submit to a really high category (like Health/) just because you can't work it out - unreviewed queues at top level categories can take a long time to be cleared because of people doing this.

Hope that helps. :)

We're more than happy to create new categories, but at the same time we ask that when you suggest a new category to provide a couple of URLs that would fit in that category.

Thanks for the input.

I'm a little bit unclear what the resource zone is though?

Rafalk are you a DMOZ editor?

It's a website.

www.resource-zone.com

You can ask specific questions about your site there, unlike here where you can't give specifics.

I had a similar problem with my site. It's a large Yellow Pages Directorsy for my o****ry (the largest actually) and as such really covers most categories. i.e. my page would be interesting to somebody lookign for restaurants as well as property or clothes. It ended up in the Cirectories sub section of my regional category. But folsk don't really go there to look for specific items or services, people whom I might be able to help :(
