Underserving super categories on DMOZ

How can you avoid going into low PR sub categories?

I've recently noticed something about my DMOZ listing. I'm a regional website, as I serve for my country only. So I registered on DMOZ in
Regional > Europe > MyCountry > My subject Matter > My Subject

which has a PR 3 or 4, fair enough.

I've noticed though that some of my direct competitors have been inserted at
Regional > Europe > MyCountry
which is a PR 7.

Now the DMOZ regulations state clearly that you have to apply in the MOST SPECIFIC category.

What is the best course of action?

More specifically I have a directory website which is relevant in a large number of subjects (instead of just Directories) and would fit well in the country level DMOZ category, a PR 7 page.

If your site only serves a local area then you are in the right part of the directory. If your competitors are in a top level category and you feel that there sites are also better suited to a local category such as yourself then the best thing to do is to email the editor of the category their site is in and inform them of this and hope for action to be taken, give them a while to reply, if after two weeks try the editor in the parent category.

I suggest searching on Google for resource-zone, register on the forum and then ask the question in the most relevant section of the forum and some one will look into it for you. The forum is run by metas from the ODP and should be able to help you. Its best to ask any questions about the ODP there as they are the people that run the directory.

Thank you.

One question remains. The website in question is the largest business directory for this country and as such covers over 2700 subject areas, from the local butcher to web design firms to major government agencies and banks. Now the categorisation in DMOZ is acurate as Directory, but on the other hand most people won't look there when the look for something in particular, like the address of a Company or shop. In fact our directory is the only online presence for many of teh companies displayed. Would not be a national listing, directly under Regional > Europe > Country be more appropriate? It certainly would be more desirable for its PR 7 influence.

Thanks,

DMOZ isnt related to Google or PR distribution in any way, the promise of a better PR category wouldnt matter to any editor at the ODP.

If it is a national directory then it belongs in a top level category. If the listings are only of local interest though it would be put in a local category.

it's definitely of national inrerest as we list more businesses then any other online or printed directory. Furthermore it's a country with <400000 population, andpretty much any business here is national :)

I'll bring it up in the DMOZ Forums.
Thanks,

Ah I think I know which country you're talking about.

For larger countries, and indeed most large categories, it's increasing common to push ALL the entries further down, so it's rare to see entries is Regional > Europe > Mycountry, or even Regional > Europe > Mycountry > Subcategory.

In this particular instance, I'm suprised that there isn't a "Directories" category.

Oh there is, it's
Regional > Europe > Country > Business and Economy > Directories > Other Category

Which is accurate for my site.

But this is a PR 3 page, while my direct competitor (with a smaller, less ocmprehensive website) is listed in
Regional > Europe > Country
which is PR 7.

Furthermore since my website comprehensively covers over 2700 seperate catregories, I always found it hard to get listed properly, since my page is relevant to msot lookups for hte country. And most visitors to DMOZ won't be looking for a directory, but for a particular subject matter.
And basically without listing my site in jstu about eversy sub category under Country, DMOZ won't bring the visitors to the material they may be needing.

Of course I appreciate the problems with this, and agree taht they can't list a site under more categories, but also that is not a good representation of how things are, since most sites don't neatly fit into one category.

Most of the time when submiting to this kind of directory I don't even know where to start.

Its best to go over to resource-zone and post there, you will get a response from a meta/editall :)
