Can someone list the most important directories and how important they are to be part of; relative to eachother?

ODP, Yahoo and Zeal. The ODP is obviously important as it is always free. Thus, you'll always get more from any listing than you paid. ;) Yahoo and Zeal are very important for a non-commercial site. Particularly Zeal. The traffic I get from my Looksmart listings via Zeal are very significant. If you have to pay, then the issue is whether the Yahoo! directory listing will yield more than $299 a year from click through traffic. The Google PageRank value of most Yahoo! directory listings is minimal. You'll almost always get much better for a lot less in that regard by paying a teenager with a high PR page for a link. Looksmart is worth it only if the PPC costs are less than the profits they generate. Hardly anyone uses Looksmart/Zeal as an actual directory.

You can also look in the Google directory for directories listed by PR value.

I agree with the ODP/Yahoo/Zeal list...of those, I've found Zeal easiest to get a listing in (if you have a noncommercial site). Also consider subject-specific directories...I have a couple photo sites and Photolinks.com has been great for those.
