Can anyone explain the difference in presentation DMOZ gives when doing a search within DMOZ for mydomain.

I get some listings in: Open Directory Categories
But I get all listing in: Open Directory Sites

Open Directory Categories
Lists only the categories where your domain is found.

Open Directory Sites
Shows all of the listings for your domain.

coconutz,

Sorry, I still do not understand.

What is the difference between "domain found" and "domain listed"?

Both with "Open Directory Categories" and "Open Directory Sites" the listings link to my site.

I thought it had to do with being regional/world or not, but thats not the case.

My directory is "found" or named in the Sites as well.

Categories list those cats it is listed in. "Sites" is wrong. Should be URLs. Thus, if you enter mydomain.com it'll show all URLs that have been listed, including the deeplinks.

coconutz & rfgdxm1,

take a search for "webmasterworld" (if Brett allows), why are not more listed under categories? In a way it is not complete.

Looks to me that the software only allows a max of 5 to display under categories. Try searching microsoft.com.

I think rfgdxm1 has it right. By default, a search only returns the top five categories in which a search term is found. However, you can return all categories by using the advanced search.

ODP editors will also remind the public that the dmoz.org search engine is a "quick and dirty"-- and often not very quick-- tool geared to internal use. You can read all about it at dmoz.org/ODPSearch .

On the public side, the main purpose of the search is just so people can find the appropriate categories. Thus, someone wanting to know that cats about widgets could enter that and find it. However, the public doesn't need to search by domain name. The whole idea behind a directory is to find sites that you don't already know about.

thanks rfgdxm1,

allthough it does show a "more" once in a while (as with microsoft),

so my confusion remains...

it also seems to take the first five - chronologically?
