I thought it was just me. All morning it's been down.

That's strange.

Possibly DMOZ decided to be offline all day because they wanted to have the rdf dump quicker or maybe they got their new hardware.

Eliteweb,
From here it looks to be DNS. Also why just go offline without a message why?

Ooops... or there wasn't until a few minutes ago. Maybe its because I've been editing on and off all day ;-)

I just got in from both the public and editor side. dmoz.org has been VERY problematic the last week. As in the server just failing to perform commands when editing, etc. I'm beginning to fear with all the problems the ODP has been having if the whole thing is about to self-destruct. :( Everything about the ODP gives me the feel that it is being given inadequate resources. One tech person, and the RDF takes a week to try to do, while fingers are crossed it won't fail? In a Usenet NG I frequent some people were suggesting complaining to the bosses at AOL about this, even posting snail mail addresses, phone numbers, etc. On a technical level the ODP is becoming a PR disaster for AOL/Netscape. I've gotta wonder how thrilled Google is with this, given that Google is #1 and wants to have a good reputation. A 5 month out of date directory for Google is Not Good.

>> AOL/Netscape <<

If these clowns won't give it the respect it deserves they should pass it on to someone who will.

This is defacto public property... not a toy or a play thing for a lazy ignorant selfish corporate.

There must be plenty of takers out there for it, particulalrly SEs. Yes, Google is the obvious candidate, but there are others.

The sooner it finds a worthy home the better.

Since for AOL/Netscape the ODP is just a cost center, they really need to get the ODP running relatively smooth again, or give it to someone else. It is at the point where people are hating AOL/Netscape for running the ODP, rather than giving them a warm, fuzzy feeling. Thus, it is in there interest to do *something*. My idea is that AOL/Netscape and Google should form some sort of partnership. In particular, Google should have the technical know how to get this done. From the Google users point of view, this is just the "Google Directory". It doesn't look good for Google's cutting edge image for it to be a half year out of date. What it would cost Google to do this would be peanuts for an outfit their size.

Google does not rely solely on the ODP for its data base. Googlebot is out roaming all week and so is freshbot. I wouldn't worry too much about Google's ability to stay on the cutting edge. :)

But the Google directory, which is linked to from the home page, is hardly cutting edge at the moment. This gives Google a black eye with users.

Most "users" don't have a clue about the directory. All they care about is accurate search results and as far as they know, they are getting them.

As I said, "To everything. there is a season" ... it may be that the ODP has had its day or it may be that this rather public failure to produce will spur "somebody" to do something about the ODP's current situation.

It smells very similar to the lengthy delays in updating the database which Excite (and others) went through but never managed to recover from.

Google's directory is certainly not the be all and end all which you make it out to be. Ask someone who is not involved with webmasters or SEO's if and how they use the directory. I think you will be surprised how few really give a darn or even know anything about it.

Google's "black eye" is no more than a hiccough IMHO.

I have watched ODP gradually go downhill in the past year or so as resources seem to be getting less and less.
In fact, one of the reasons I was fired as an editor a year or so ago is because of my public rants about the non-support of ODP by AOL.

It appears that the predictions I made then about implosions are coming true.

It is possible that the server is just unreachable on the Net due to their connectivity provider having a failure.

Please note that the whole of dmoz.org went off for a short while in the last hour or so. While work is ongoing over the next day or so, I suppose that it is possible that it will be taken offline again if it becomes necessary.

The directory is online. It's their forums which are down, and that fact is, from what I understand, announced when you try to enter them.

Also, once would have been enough. :)

Actally the whole of DMOZ was unavailable for a short time. If anyone does have a problem with the public side the mirror at ch.dmoz.org is still available.
