Hi,
1) Could you share a list of good directories?
2) How recognize and avoid which one is 'free for all'?
3) Is Yahoo directory worth $299?
Thanks

2) look out for words in the footer like "generated by zeus."

3) probably yes i think, a yahoo listing pretty much guarantees a google crawl, (same for dmoz but it can take a while for an Open Directory listing to happen)

also currently yahoo directory is not featured in the yahoo serps but it can change soon enough

Here is a very good place to start :

[dmoz.org...]

Many regional or specialised topic listings ca be a real benefit too.
This query [search.dmoz.org] reveals a few more.

Dont forget all those business directories.

To benefit from the link in search engines it would be good, though not mandatory for the directory to link directly, not via redirects.

1) Do a google search for "keyword+add+link" and you get the directories related to your topic. It works in many cases ... just try different combinations like "keyword+suggest+site" or "keyword+submit+site". This way you'll find also a lot of gossamer threads or hypersearch driven directories that sometimes are really worth to submit your site to. Some of them redirect to your site (jum.cgi?id=1234) instead of linking directly to you ... they don't pass any pr to you if the jump.cgi is robots.txt-disallowed to crawl. But you're not only hunting for pr , or!? ;)

2) If the directory is well organized and the categories are clean of garbage, it's a good sign. If the directory has some good additional content it's better. If the directory specializes in your market/theme it's a top.

3) Hmmm... depends. I'm in yahoo since years, placed on top of the yahoo internal search results and receive only about 300 referers a year in a mid popular (special interest) market. I don't submit any more pages to yahoo - *for me* it's not worth the money.

Look at gossamer and similar and find the footer, they typically have the same thing on the bottom, then search for that, you'll find plenty of sites using the software you like for links.

Regarding spidering with cgi forwarding, I have a feeling this is changing...I think I've seen it but I'm not an SEO and still learning here.

That's a good link Macguru provided, however if you want them in order of priority, start from the top here [directory.google.com] ;)

If you have a multi-lingual site, consider checking some of the European threads [webmasterworld.com]. Here you'll find directories in most countries worth submitting to. Good luck!
