Problems Losing DMOZ Listing

Hello,

We've had our site listed for several years in the DMOZ and as a result it has always shown up properly on Yahoo!, Google, AOL, etc. We've always been listed under the Shopping > Antiques and Collectibles > Resources and Information category. It appears that for some reason that category has now disappeared and now (for the past two months) we are no longer showing up on any of the search engines. Whenever folks would type in "my keyword" or "my other keyword" we would come up consistenly on the first page of all of the SE. Now - we don't come up anywhere. This is seriously hurting our business as no new clients are finding us. If anyone has any ideas that could help it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Joseph Gutwirth

Hi, Joseph, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Two primary suggestions: First, work on getting other good quality links to your site. DMOZ is usually a very good link that doesn't cost anything, but because many categories have editing backlogs you should work on other fronts - search here for link finding techniques and you'll get some good strategies.

As far as DMOZ goes, first I'd suggest figuring out if you are out of the directory completely. If so, then resubmit to an appropriate category. If you don't get listed in a couple of weeks, try contacting the editor of that cat. If that fails, try moving up the tree and contacting the next level editor, and so on.

Was DMOZ your only good link? It's kind of surprising that losing that one caused you to tank so completely.

Good luck!

PS. A mod will most likely remove your URL from your post due to the terms of service here...

That particular category really didn't contain sites that offer Shopping so it was dismantled and the sites moved for review under Recreation/Antiques. Recreation/Antiques has a very, very large queue.

Thank you for the suggestions and excellent information. I did try to resubmit six weeks ago to the recreation->antiques category, but I'll go ahead and resubmit since it doesn't appear to have taken. Thank again.

Sincerely,
Joseph

Any plans to get dug into it in the near future?

josephgut, do not resubmit. As I said, sites that were in the old category were moved to unreviewed in the Recreation cat. Resubmitting won't help get it listed faster and only makes more work for the resident editor(s).

Do you mean me personally? No (antiques aren't my thang and my plate is already full). If you mean anyone else, I have no idea. :)
