I submitted several times and was told by editor that nothing received - who can i complain to, or is this a private club?

pentakle,

I don't know the history here, but here's what I'd do:

  • Be nice.
  • Resubmit

I assume you're talking about ODP here, and the editors are all volunteers. Now that you have the editor's attention, a polite request will elicit better results than accusations. If you believe there is a possible conflict of interest in this case, save your correspondence with this editor, in case you need to "go up the chain of command" with your problem - you will need documentation.

    Good luck!
    Jim

Just resubmit and forget about it. A lot of the editors there aren't even very concerned about getting your site listed, they're too busy listing their own sites. Your time is better spent in areas like forming reciprocal link relationships with compatible sites, and optimizing your internal links. Getting a directory listing often just isn't worth the time and effort.

If you received the "cannot determine IP address" error, your submission was received but not put into the queue in the local category, so the local editor would not see it-- instead it got dumped in a giant bin of misdirected submissions that a team of editalls is working on getting sorted out.

As for the charge that editors are interested only in their own sites, that is certainly the case for some, but those caught manipulating those listings or deleting/manipulating their competitors' are removed. If you think this is such a case, please sticky mail.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, pentakle. To give the editor the benefit of the doubt, there have been site problems on and off for weeks. While I haven't heard of wholesale loss of submitted sites, it's remotely possible your submissions didn't go where they were supposed to. As others have suggested, be nice, resubmit, and communicate with the editor who contacted you. Since you seem to have a live human involved now, your chances of being listed are probably very good.
