I love this site, it's great. It made me think more about search engines and directories and motivated me to write a nice long letter to DMOZ in my resubmission to editor status.

I had been disabled due to not logging in...I'm quite a busy person but I realized that the area of my expertise is important and desperately needs reorg. I am commited to making sure that those categories will be taken care of if they reinstate me...

Maybe it sounds corny, but I thought I'd mention it since webmasterworld inspired me to help out the community...Great job Brett!

Good luck getting reinstated. Seems like those that just time out usually make it back in w/o any probs.

heretic, it doesn't sound corny at all! When you think about it, there are a lot of wonderful things that happen in this world because of people's volunteer efforts, whether it's their time, talent or material resources.

I am commited to making sure that those categories will be taken care of if they reinstate me...

That's probably the key to it being a productive, satisfying and personally enriching experience, while also making an impact - commitment. There always have been opportunities on the local level, ranging from animal welfare and adoption to Big Brother and Sister efforts and child advocacy on up to political participation on the precinct level and pitching in during natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes.

Volunteer efforts on the internet, however, while they're often very anonymous and under-appreciated or unrecognized, can and do have an impact on a global level.

Sometimes it's one-on-one personal support between individuals, but in the case of ODP it's international and huge in scope. It amazes me to think about something that's primarily volunteer-manned by so many thousands, each taking care of their own little corner, that in spite of little glitches has had such a widespread impact in so short a time.

It probably pays to count the cost in advance and know how much time or effort a commitment will take. Hope you get back in to the little corner of your choice. ODP is a great place to make a commitment.
