I'm hoping that it isn't actually submitting them, otherwise I will be penalised for duplicate submissions!
There is a known "cannot log IP address" problem with a small number of submissions attempted using Internet Explorer, relating to some vagaries of customized security, proxy, firewall, and cache settings. No one has found the definitive combination, making it difficult to report and correct. It can be gotten around by using a different browser, any browser, to submit.
I have even tried using NN4.79 without any success. I just think that the submission server is junk. They are making it a nightmare to get sites included in the directory. It is hard enough with AWOL/corrupt editors in some areas, without the added problem of not actually being able to submit in the first place.
I bet there are a lot more people having problems submitting .
Combined with the extensive down time and lack of RDF dump updates the ODP is showing all the signs of a dying beast.
FTR I have just now successfully added test urls, using the public submission form, with IE 5.5, Mozilla 1.1, Netscape 4.77, and Lynx 2.8.3. I wouldn't consider four seconds to be "painfully long" but that is a matter of opinion. How exactly I am supposed to help you is not clear in your post.
And the wait isn't four seconds, it is more two minutes; I just timed it and gave up at the 150 second mark. I get the same stupidly long wait whether submitting through a proxy or not. I hope that you can understand the frustation of watching a page for 3 minutes only to be given a 404 error! BTW, I have a very fast cable connection.
There is obviously something wrong with the server setup. I didn't say it was broken, I said it was junk. What else would you call a submission server that doesn't let people submit? The ODP blaming users for having incompatible systems just doesn't cut it. I don't have this problem submitting on any other sites, and it is such a simple submission that there are no excuses.
I presume that they have introduced an IP checking system to remove automated submissions. Unfortunately this has had some substantial knock-on effects for genuine users as well. Hence they need to fix it quickly or remove it.
And I wasn't asking for help, I was just reporting the same error as other people here ;)
And she wrote back that they were having server problems and a new one will be up as soon as they can manage it. Rephrasing by Laisha. Please see [webmasterworld.com...]
Not that I understand the problem or even the solution...that was her answer.
