We have been in a specific category (where ALL of our competitors are) in DMOZ for ages with no problems. Just happened to check today and we are no longer there! Anyone know why on earth they might have dropped us? No affiliate, nothing that should cause them a problem.

We do still have our regional listing, but that is it!

Any help would be great!

Being dropped from the public listing does not necessarily mean that your site has been removed from the ODP.

Often, a site has simply been sent to a new location; the editor of the new category must approve the move just as s/he would need to approve a new submission from the public. Perhaps the old category has been reorganized (for instance, the recent Business/ reorganization [webmasterworld.com]), or the scope of the category has been changed and listings are provided exclusively in Regional/ (check the Description for the category or its parents), or an editor in the area simply thought another category would be a more appropriate placement.

Thanks for the quick response!

We had both listings for about a month. If I could tell you the category that it has been dropped from, you'd see that it fits *perfectly*. Also, it doesn't look like they moved it or anything, since I type in my domain and the only category that comes up is the regional one...:(

*rolls eyes*

One month = forever?

[dmoz.org...] will answer your question.

One month = forever?

What I MEANT to say was that the one we were dropped from we have been there "forever" (i.e. years), but this NEW one we have only been in for about a month.

That link is interesting, but they certainly aren't adhering to it, since 90% of the links in that category are the same type as mine.

Also, we do not sell products online, we just show them.

Ohh, I'm working on cleaning up the category and others in the area. I have a feeling that it will be dismantled completely.

kctipton:

Thanks for your help! In light of that information, I submitted my site to Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Machinery_and_Tools/Vehicle_Repair_and_Maintenance/. Hopefully it fits there...

Good luck cleaning up the mess! :)

Do you think Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Machinery_and_Tools/Vehicle_Repair_and_Maintenance/ would be an appropriate place for our listing?

The site certainly appears to have a 'national' (US) spread, so there seems no reason not to have a Business/ listing. It'll probably reappear once the re-org has settled down.

Do you sell the things purely to businesses - or do you sell individually to the public - if so, Shopping/Vehicles/Parts_and_Accessories/ [dmoz.org] may be the answer?

Or have you seen Business/Automotive/Parts_and_Accessories/ [dmoz.org]

But I'm no auto expert :)

Quadrille:

We do sell primarily to businesses, or to people wishing to start a business. I hadn't seen the Business/Automotive/Parts_and_Accessories/ category. I think it would be a good fit, except that I already submitted to a different one, and certainly don't want to be a spammer...:) Should I just go ahead and submit or wait to see if the other category picks it up?

Thanks!

If you have already submitted, I'd leave it for a few days; see what the local editor does. You may get your previous wish - or it may be moved sideways!
