Two Pages in One ODP Category

Somebody else added a second page from the same site

I had have a page that I submitted and had accepted in a DMOZ category. After this last Google update I saw another page from the same site was added to the exact same category.

This happened once before. At that time I told one of the editors about it and had the second page removed. I was concerned about getting all of my DMOZ pages dropped for that site (about 15) in case they thought I was oversubmitting pages, even though I wasn't the one who submitted the second page to the same category.

Now it has happened again with a different category. The site in question got a nice little boost in the rankings last month for some pages because of it, but I'm worried that someone at DMOZ will think I'm oversubmitting my own pages if I don't say anything.

So should I tell them about it again or would I be an idiot to actually ask to have a DMOZ listing removed?

If you did not submit the second page and you feel it may damage your overall DMOZ listings, then I would ask it be removed with an explanation as to why. I think that would stand you in far greater stead that potentially being seen as a spammer.

It's possible an editor added that page on his or her own.

That's what happened the time before - an editor added it himself. I guess they don't have an easy way to check to see if a page from the same domain is already listed.

I decided I would send an email and point it out to them and see if they want to remove it. It's just a hobby page and not one I make any money from, so there is no point in jeopardizing my other pages.

Actually, it is indeed visible if a url is already in a category. The editing control panel shows all the cats a url is in.

Additionally, there is log file of all prior events relative to that url (additions to a cat, deletions, movement from one cat to another, etc.).

But the notes are specific to the URL, not the domain itself; so duplicates do not immediately present themselves. However, two in the same cat does present a risk, as it is against guidelines ... and likely to be spotted sooner or later.

If you have something to lose, I'd agree that a note to the editor is advisable.

If the site is informative enough that editors keep adding it on their own, I wouldn't worry.

Editors are able to see the difference between the fact that you submitted one and an editor added one, so if there were ever any question about it, it would be clear to whoever was looking into it what happened.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've never been a DMOZ editor, but I was just surmising that it must be hard to spot pages from the same URL because this is the second time I've had two pages added to one category.

I did send an email to the category editor explaining my concerns and the second listing is now history.

Thanks Laisha, I didn't see your post before I submitted my last post.
That's exactly what I was concerned about. I didn't know if the ODP folks kept records of how pages got added and who submitted them. If it happens again, next time I'll know not to worry.

ooOoo the two dmoz listing issue, this is generally brought upon by the submitter waiting a few weeks after their first submission that didnt make it in. possibly the second title or url was different in a way or the editors didnt check to see if it was already listed. I ran into this myself a while ago so I e-mailed the editors but nothing happened. I think once an editor notices two listings for the same url they will remove one of the two. unless your a true spammer i doubt they would remove all your listings.

this was happens awhile ago - one site was listed for more than a year, a clean site. One day it was gone from ODP, I contacted the editor and he wrote me back that this site was submitted again and for that reason they removed the listing - after I told them that nobody from us did a second submission they listed the site again - if this is so easy everybody could harm other sites.
