I have a listing in Zeal in a category that doesn't exist in LookSmart at all. The parent category is present but my site wouldn't be there.

Would the site be listed in LookSmart or just discarded?

Martin,

Zeal and LookSmart are the same directory, so there must be some explanation why your site doesn't show up. Can you add your URL to your profile or sticky me with it? I'll try to investigate.

Hey, this could be a good thing. I snuck my client into a high PR cat with no other sites in it on dmoz. Unfortunately, the category didn't exist on Google.

At first I slapped my forhead and said, "Aw maaaaaaaaaaan..."

But a month later I noticed that Google had busted open a new cat to accomodate my client, who is now sucking up all that nice PR.

It could happen to you.

webman:

I'm aware that Zeal and LookSmart use the same db, it's just that a few days ago there was a problem at LookSmart - my site shows up now.

In order for a site listed in Zeal to show up in LookSmart I think it has to be in the lowest level category possible.

Say the category string is:

Home>Business>Marketing>Internet>Search_Engine>Optimization_Firms

I think a site listed in any of the categories in that string other than Optimization_Firms will not show up in LookSmart.

Nah SkiBum, Looksmart Directory IS The Zeal Directory. When you pay for a Looksmart listing, an employee of Looksmart actually goes to Zeal and adds the site to a commercial category. If no commercial category exists, it get put in the regular category mixed right in with the rest of them in alphabetical order.

As far as I know, only bottom level categories get into LookSmart, but a site which is in a higher level directory must exist in a bottom level one too.

Nah. It's just that rarely does a site get excepted into a higher level category if there are cats below it. I've got pages listed where they've since created sub-cats and haven't moved my page down into it, yet.
