I applied to be the editor of the category I was interested in being listed in because there wasn't one and I feel like I would make a good editor. However, I didn't mention my affiliation to my site and now I feel like an idiot. I was rejected for that very reason.
Do I have a shot at ever getting listed?
I agree with Skibum that the best route would be to apply for a category that you have *no* business interest, as for your site being accepted I can't see a problem if it is suitable for the category to which you submitted.
If you submitted the site along with your application (i.e on the application form) then you may want to wait for 2/3 weeks and then resubmit the site.

I resubmitted my application for the same category. I am qualified for the category and my site would be a great addition. I was clear about my affiliation to my site.
Question: I wrote to the editors of the main shopping category asking about my site listing. Are these the same people who review my application to be an editor?
Anyone have a better idea on how the process works when you submit an application?

Not neccessarily. Kctipton and I are the people who review your application. ;)
More generally any meta editor [dmoz.org] can review applications.
