Example: A site provides free resources on programming language, and includes links to related amazon.com books.
I have two sub-sites on C/C++ and Linux. Both contain links to amazon.com books. Yet, the zealots approved both two submissions within less than 3 days. And less than 3 days later, both sub-sites appeared on MSN Search and LookSmart.
Remember: before you submit, include the supposedly popular keywords on your webpage title and description. Use the title and description on your submission. The search results on MSN Search apparently rely heavily on your submission's title. If the title of your webpage and submission doesn't match, the zealot will modify it, and you'll end up on low search result position.
Submitting to zeal.com has one big advantages to me. That is, I learned on how to make good submission title and description, through their zeal quiz. After the zealot approved my submission, I use the same submission title and description into DMOZ. And I got listed within less than a week.
If the category is commercial, then the only way to get into that category is to purchase through LookListings. Sometimes there are subcategories of a commercial category that are not commercial, so look hard for a free category before you pay to submit.
