Gigablast needs an adult filter, so does WiseNut

As I mentioned in this post about WiseNut errors [webmasterworld.com] both Gigablast and WiseNut seem to be missing an adult filter to their default settings.

Most 'ordinary' surfers won't customize their preferences, skin the engine, etc. They will simply type in their query and click the 'back button' if they get something they don't want.

WiseNut [wisenut.com] and Gigablast [gigablast.com] are both guilty in this regard for the adult listings showing up in a generic search. With listings like that, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for me to use them.

It's a simple matter of trust.

Google and Inktomi both are way ahead on this one, and for the most part, Alltheweb is up there as well. I don't find listings that are VERY inappropriate when I search with any of them. Google is my favorite, as I believe they have the best SERP's.

Imho, these engines won't really be able to get anywhere long term, unless they clean up their SERP. I know, things take time - but if they do have the ability to filter this stuff, they should turn it on by default.

Not to mention, the pages I found were also auto generated instead of 'hand made' :) Lol.

Over and over, I've noticed 'little things' like this or that - and they could simply do better which is why I keep bringing this up. As we all know, SE reps from every search engine we talk about read here. Whether they admit it or not.

So, let's see how long it takes to clean it up - or am I wrong, and they shouldn't by default adult stuff from generic searches?

I agree, and I imagine that any other people with kids out there will.

Maybe we should come up with a filter specification: things that shouldn't be available by default (obviously not in too much detail though :) )

what about something like allowing a parent to password protect the on/off adult filter option?

Accually Wisenut has a filter now it's called WiseWatch... it's under the preferences area.

he he, that filter has been there for a while. At least a year and a half...

the problem I'm referring to is the fact that you get adult results for a NON adult search.

Which, from time to time, impacts many an SE. However, when doing some research (and the reason for the post) was that these two seemed to be suffering from it much more than Google, Alltheweb, or Altavista.
