We have been using Alexa as an independent guide to our website's popularity. Until a few weeks ago, Alexa only gave a single number (the three-month average) for site ranking. Now however, they have daily, weekly and three-month average figures and a daily ranking graph.

You can compare two sites on the graph. We are finding this extremely useful as we try to beat our rivals in our market. One result of this is that we have put all our domains under one root domain, giving us a higher ranking.
I beleive that this system will become more acurate than Google. For example, using the *Japan* keyword we are about 30th in google, but in Alexa we would be in the top five. I wonder if anyone has any comments.

PS:I am not affilated with Alexa in any way.
In other surveys about.com/Primedia was ranked in the top ten... use some other source.
MediaMetrix used to rank About.com/Primedia in the top 10. I don't know if that's still true; I understand that About.com's traffic has slipped quite a bit, and Primedia has sold off some of its biggest properties (including Modern Bride, which is now owned by Condé Nast).
Of greater importance is the fact that MediaMetrix is ranking multiple properties and domains under the Primedia umbrella, while Alexa is ranking only About.com. So comparing MediaMetrix and similar rankings with Alexa rankings is like comparing apples and oranges--or like comparing AOL Time Warner with Time Magazine.
Alexa rankings may not be perfect, but neither are the rankings of MediaMetrix and similar services. I can remember when I had the opportunity to join an About.com ad network called the Luna Network. Part of the deal was that I'd sign a letter authorizing MediaMetrix to include my site's traffic in About.com's traffic for rating purposes. I had no idea why MediaMetrix was a party to such an arrangement, but I had very little faith in MediaMetrix's rankings after that.
