I say AV/LS merger. LS's books look a lot better than they did.

Excite will go on the auction block.

Av will survive - av will survive.

Maybe we should start a referral pool - donate click throughs to the pool.

No, AV can't go...hope someone will merge at least with AV.

Various mutterings in the financial press say that CMGI will have to start hawking AV pdq, if it hasn't started already. They pulled the IPO a final time, remember? To a VC, the exit is in the IPO.

The AV nameplate may survive, but it ain't gonna be the same AV.

Here's a vote by proxy from Rob over at geeks.com [geek.com]

The only one I think will survive in the long term is Yahoo.

ONLY Yahoo? C'mon, Google's got to tough it out too!

I'm voting for Excite to go down. They're really getting sloppy.

>Google's got to tough it out

Yeah, so far as we've heard, Google has kept their costs at rock-bottom. Let's hope rock-bottom is low enough.

When I posted this, I had forgotten about Jeeves. The butler has been listed as an April casualty by NFFC's deathwatch site.

Quarterly figures will soon be out, then we'll be able to synchronize our watches.

Definitely NBCi/Snap for joining in too late and for trying to make a better "Portal"(porta potty?) that no one will ever use.

Yahoo -- Will never die
AltaVista -- gettin sold to L$ and adding GoTo
ODP -- Still the best and in for the long haul
Lycos -- Looking for new income
Excite -- making a come back
iWon -- did they win ;)
Looksmart -- partner with AV,GoTo,INK
AskJeeves -- We'll have to ask him
AOL Search -- PfP to make more $$
GoTo -- getting richer every day
MSN -- lets just hope they can keep their servers running
GO.com -- WE take it over!! :)
NBCi -- getting bigger and sloppier
Google -- getting bigger and better
Fast Search -- partnership with Excite

IMHO The top contenders (in no order)
Yahoo,ODP,Google,L$,AOL,Fast

We'll just have to see how the cards fall...

Lycos will die next. For the past 3 months, every time I made a search, I was transferred to Lycos Spain!!!!! I wrote to them to find out what is going on and they never wrote back. I did manage to find a phone number for Lycos, I phoned there, and the guy used the F word on me and put the phone down. Quite frankly, I hope Lycos goes down faster than GO!!!

I agree with you backus. From a user point of view, what does it mean to get top ten results all from the same domain?

Nice list luckynh:

>Yahoo -- Will never die

yes.

>ODP -- Still the best and in for the long haul

But will have to be transformed when AOL shuts down Netscape.

>AltaVista -- gettin sold to L$ and adding GoTo

Something, but not quiet that. LS is feeling the pinch. I think MS or Yahoo will buy it.

>Lycos -- Looking for new income

Lycos is the most solid of all the engines. Even in better position than yahoo.

>Excite -- making a come back

Going once, going twice...it's history.

>iWon -- did they win

Will stick, but not because of CBS.

>Looksmart -- partner with AV,GoTo,INK

Will die, or be boughten by About.com within 18months.

>AskJeeves -- We'll have to ask him

Big trouble at AJ. Won't survive, won't be boughten.

>GoTo -- getting richer every day

They are at the peak of their game...and still losing money. hmmm.

>Google -- getting bigger and better

Will have to figure out what they are to do when the contract with Yahoo runs out in July. I could see Yahoo buying Alta.

>Fast Search -- partnership with Excite

Will continue to rise due to the low cost nature of fast. With the infusion of hardware from compaq and the money from lycos - they are the force in Europe. The net in Europe continues to grow, while the net in the US is stagnant and has almost reached its full saturation point.

Not mentioned, NorthernLight:
They are also an se on a budget. They are the only engine to successfully sell indexing/document retrieval on a pay-per-page basis. They will be here for a long time.

<<The net in Europe continues to grow, while the net in the US is stagnant and has almost reached its full saturation point>>

Yes, I agree! But itīs still the same problem as at the us-market, sometime the SEs has to earn money.
For instance Lycos-Europe:
how could it be, that a company have a turnover of EUR 40,2 mio, but also a loss of EUR 99,7 mio?
Okay, Lycos-Germany is well known but the quality of search-results are terrible - and it only updates twice a year. What does it help: nothing.

<<The net in Europe continues to grow, while the net in the US is stagnant and has almost reached its full saturation point>>

An important factor can explain the situation in Europe. Unlike here, phone bills in most European contries are based on usage. It is unthinkable to surf for hours on with a phone connection. Technologies like cable and DSL explain this sudden boom. The market will saturate there at a lower ratio then here.

Hope European SE will be better prepared when it will happen.

They are slowly getting cable ad dsl installed in Europe. We have several members here on cable lines from the UK. That can only get better. Especially in the Nordic coutries with the hotbed of wireless (read: nokia) and all telecom activity that stems from it.

oLeon, don't you think Lycos/Terra will get the problems with their se's figured out? I think they are just getting their sea legs. It is quite a leap to go international.

My vote's for Excite.
Direct Hit or Jeeves are going to fade out soon. They're too small to compete well. Excite has just been so unreliable for submissions it's going to catch up with their database and what users are finding and will cost them traffic and $ in the long run. I could see them partnering with LS to gain some footing and a permanent directory to supplement their listings. That might save them. Lycos has some deep overseas pockets behind it at the moment and will keep it up for a while.

<<oLeon, don't you think Lycos/Terra will get the problems with their se's figured out?>>
I hope so, but I really donīt trust them who are behind it: might be that they donīt want to see burning away their money anymore (millons of dollars, we all know), and they decide doing the same as Disney...
They know what they do (and what not): one of Lycos (Germany) has told that to us.

<<I think they are just getting their sea legs. It is quite a leap to go international.>>
Oh yeah, but itīs harder to survive when you are big and
immovable. And I disagree with the point of view that only the biggest will survive - the bigger the more money you lose, thatīs what happens now.
Weīll see in 2001.

Don't forget that Excite is owned by @Home, and @Home is owned by AT&T. So Excite has deeeeeep pockets to survive on. They will be around for a long time, although they may go through changes.

AT&T is giving some small indications they are willing to let Excite waste away. I know they are on different wave lengths now that the AOL/TW merger is done. With AOL making forays into cable/broadband, that gives AT&T good cause to reinvest in Excite. I don't think they will - AT&T has thus far shown no aptitude for online media.

ATT is having revenue and stock price problems of its own. Look for a fire sale.
