Apparently Excite has done a major re-indexing today after lo these many months. Anyone else out there see any movement/additions?

Rockintom, hi, yes, I just took a look. Is it just me, or are the results looking spammy?

I checked the excite uk and that's been updated too.

Engine,
I think they're going for quantity instead of quality. I was just suprized to see the update. Can Webcrawler be far behind? ;)

Well, I finally got a bunch of my clients into excite. For some reason it feels anti-climactic. MAN, this was an incredibly long wait - some of my new listings are for companies that are now dead.

Don't get me wrong I like the traffic, but this is crazy.

Well I'm stunned! Good rankings at last on Excite - I'd given up on them. The last update I saw was in June last year.

wow. I guess somebody had to post that they couldn't rank to save their life in there.... and I guess that somebody would have to be me:(

I feel like I left home for 2 years, came back, and my dog didn't even recognize me. Nothing. Nada. the Big Goose Egg.... And I'm in... but...gulp... I am in the middle of the pack:(

the exact same sites *rock* in the EX directory, so I have to question the value of LS in regular search (at least in my case.) If it did help, then my sites suck even worse than I thought.

I have checked my SERP's at excite every day, call me crazy but I hade a feeling, Acctually I was looking for my LookSmart listing to be changed. I requested my LookSmart listing change back on Feb.I request my LookSmart listing to be changed
Read This [webmasterworld.com]thread for the rest of the my LookSmart experiances

Then each day i did a www.MYSITE.com search on Excite to see when my listing would change

The only results i have been getting for that site is the LookSmart listing. Now I'm not sure if i was correctly looking for whatever page Excite had listed for this site but the only one that came up was the LookSmart list.

Now today i did the same search for www.MYSITE.com and it listed 90 pages (every page in my site)

Althoug when I break down to the category listing my site still shows the OLD LookSmart description.

My guess is that they updated their DB with out the LookSmart newest information.

Like little, I've got a bunch of domains now indexed that are all parked on redirects because they've all been moved since they were submitted last summer. On the other hand, we have fifteen top five listings of what 5000 (ack!) pages.

It's nice to see the old girl come out of hibernation. I thought it was a sign it was doa.

Our looksmart listings are not ranking well at all in excite. Anyone think they may have intentionally NOT ranked them well at all?

... age factor? The very oldest domain I have 3+ years is top 5.... and some of my old adult stuff has been deep crawled, but I am so far down I don't know which way up is.

...my 'best' sites were the ones in the directory. I had secret hopes they might switch that tab for once and show the directory and LS a little love.

OMG!!!! They actually have two pages of our site listed! I first submitted to them in September... been in Ink since Oct.... and NOW I finally appear in Excite! We'll see if the traffic actually justfies calling it "Excite-ing" or not, but I can't belelive they actually updated!

Just noticed this today.

First, referrals have gone sky-high the last two days from Excite.

Excite has changed the algo a bit to give sites with a Looksmart directory listing a BIG boost compared to sites that do not.

Sites with a listing now have the listing shown with their result. Also showing the actual page title and the actual page description.

This leads me to believe that directory sites are NOW taken into account. Excite does not seem to be using the actual directory listing in the results but instead, they are factoring in this when returning results.

This is big. Makes a Looksmart listing all the more important.

<added>AltaVista is NOW doing the exact same thing as Excite is!!!</added>

I mean the EXACT same thing.

The listings are just like Google does:

Google lists the directory and also the exact page title. The only difference is Google makes up the description on the fly according to the search terms.

Everything else is NOW THE SAME with AltaVista, Excite, and Google.

A big wow! :)

Ya know, I forgot how much traffic could be had from Excite. So far today I am over 3,000 excite referrers! This is getting to feel kinda good.

A site that was listed in LS 2 weeks ago is now listed in Excite webpages and webdirectory.
Brett may have to change the name on this forum again if this keeps up.

That is great news.... a LS listing might make it hard for EX drop you too.

I would love to see this engine fire back up.... too much to hope for

Geeez, ,I must have been sleeping!

Weve been wacked - top 5's which have been there for 2 years are gone.

"Looksmart in regular search giving a boost" - I dont see any boostage in my areas!

Only consolation is that a site which was submitted six months ago is in and has hit the mark! problem being that clients stopped paying and its now a dead end! :(

Hi all - My first post here. I've been lurking for a while and these forums are fantastic.
Whats not so fantastic is Excites update-taken a bit of a knock!
What I don't get is one of our sites has been in Excite at position 2 for a keyword for a long time! It was changed about 2 months ago and with this update it comes up at 8 with new title and description. When i do a URL check for that site one page is found and its the old page with old title and desription. THe site was never in looksmart. Does that mean the updates not over...we hope...

Hi Orange, welcome. And a special thanks for un-lurking! ;)

It could be the search results are showing an older database to back up the new results. If the old page no longer exists, the spider either hasn't been around to find it, or, they are building from new (unlikely), or they just havent updated the older data and are preferring to show new data first - after all, the new data should be more up-to-date.

LOL... they FINALLY add us to their web index, and we've gotten a whopping TWO hits from Excite referrers in the last two days. Wow. We're really on a roll now!

I'm seeing the reindexing has not seemed to settle yet. Ins and outs and ups and downs are still occurring.

After waiting for 8 months to get more sites into Excite, I got 7 domains in. Each has only the home page but that was the procedure when I had my first site in. First they index your homepage and then they will deep crawl on the second time. I hope that excite gets back to weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly updates. The old grey mare is awake. I am also seeing the same results in Webcrawler. I am a very happy camper.

I can confirm some kind of major re-index of results. Traffic from Excite is up across all of our client sites, some 200%.

On one site we have come from nowhere into top 10 rankings on 10-20 2nd-tier terms, and in one 3rd-tier regional term the site occupies the TOP 10 results - unfortunately can look like you're spamming.

Results are from a very fresh crawl showing page titles that were changed less than 4 weeks ago. They are even doing better than Google here which is still showing 2-month old titles! (c'mon Google!)

There is some evidence of new ranking algo, results are definitely now more similar to FAST/Google (across our domains). What does everyone else think?

"I am also seeing the same results in Webcrawler"

I can confirm that! Running through some sites and have already found 3 new listings in webcrawler (sites that were never submitted)... who would have thought?

Apparently Webcrawler is now using the Excite database. Now if we can only get people to use Webcrawler....

I also saw a WebCrawler update on my pages. So I think we can say it is official.

A source at Excite says that essentially they are throwing no resources at WebCrawler. Still, I'd rather be at the top of the list on an engine, even if hardly anyone uses it.

In my opinion, Excite is making a mistake with WebCrawler. They should just have [webcrawler.com...] redirect to the main Excite home page. Otherwise when people get crappy results from WebCrawler, they are just as likely (more likely?) to switch to Google as Excite.

I am finding the results very spammed out when it comes to certain very competitive kw phrases. There is like one domain with various subdomains that has like the top 30 spots. Not that I deny someone clever their positions, it's just that the pages are very spammy. Can you cloak for Excite?
