Link sharing programs are bad....or are they?

Are link sharing programs really something you should stay away from?

Hello. I am considering using a link sharing program to get more exposure for my site. I have heard in the past that using these kind of organized programs is not the way to go and I have also heard that they can do very well for you. I would rather build a solid base and work my way up from there. Would this be something to avoid? I am thinking that maybe trying to get my link on sites that have something in common with mine would be the way to go. Any thoughts on any of this? Thanks!

Or are there specific ones that you would use and others you would not?

Coconobuck, avoid link sharing programs if they involve linking to a common group of sites, back to the link program's own site, etc. Google views any kind of link cooperative as a threat to its algorithm, and can be expected to penalize organized link sharing programs as they are found. If they link to you, it shouldn't hurt you; but if you link to them, then you are a presumed participant.

Get links the old-fashioned way: contact sites that have visitors who might be interested in your site. And, of course, do the appropriate directory submittals.

Thanks Rogerd. It just goes to show that actually doing work yourself is the way to go. I will follow your advice.
