Hi- I am new to the forum, but not quite so new to SEO. I have three sites, two of which have made the first page of google, one of which has not gone anywhere despite 5 months of trying.

The PR is fine, but I just don't have a lot of links that are registering anymore. I am worried that as the link count drops I will fall off page one, thus killing the businesses.

I found a site (#2 result at overture for link popularity) selling links.

I know in theory this is bad, but I have tried the other solutions and just can't seem to get it to work. And it's not that my sites aren't relevant- they are more on topic for the keywords I want than most of what shows up, but with my small link counts I am just not competitive enough with the other sites.

Is this worth trying, or is it a waste of time (and hope?)

Thanks for your feedback.

Matt

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Matt. Getting high quality links to your site is never a waste of time. However, buying links from someone blatantly selling PR could be quite risky. Their own site already appears to be penalized. You would really be counting on Google not being able to identify the network of sites selling PR. If you must buy links, don't buy them from someone waving a red flag in front of Google's face... Frankly, I'd focus on building some quality links. It may be tough going, but you'll be able to sleep at night.

You also might want to put up a link exchange page complete with code for reciprocal links and a form to be filled out. This should save you some work if you're getting enough traffic and the link exchange page is easy to find from anywhere on your site. Just be sure to let users that fill out the form know that you reserve the right not to add a link back to them for any reason.

Hi m2cir and welcome. Frankly as once said by the legendary paynt, the only way to get a good link program going is through damn hard work and determination and of course the on ingredient none of us are really to willing to spare: TIME. I did what she told me and I now have a flourishing link strategy that benefits my site immensely and this is after 4 months! Hard Work I tell you but now I am reaping the rewards. You might want to take a time out and go read these threads and take it all seriously. Look at starting your campaign asap.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a link exchange on my sites, with link code and a request to exchange links (with caveats, of course). So far no takers.

My sites are difficult in that they sell single products, have no repeat business potential (not because I screw the customers, because of the nature of the product :) and most customers, though willing to write testimonials, aren't likely to have a web page of their own to post them on. So I get lots of unique visitors, some of whom buy, and few of whom ever come back or would see a reason to link to me unless they ran a highly related but non competitive site (of which there are none I can find...)

I know, woe is me :) Well, I guess I just keep struggling on, and thanks again for your feedback.

I think all this stuff about building links is the worst part of being a Webmaster, but just has to be done. It's difficult for everyone here.

If you're selling a product, try getting listed with various shopping directories. I have one, and I include just about anyone with something to sell. Most of the searchers that find my site searched for some keywords that are part of one or more directory entries, so there's really no reason why I wouldn't link to most of these sites.
